Why would you want to buy a dated, and IMO crappy OS, when Win10 is going to be released?

If you are building a system now, you should build it for the requirements that you have now. I mean, why put a Haswell processor in it when Broadwell is going to be released? Why put a GTX 980 in the system when a 1280 GTX is going to be released? You can wait forever or roll with what is available now.

At worst, you will pay the upgrade price to move to Windows 10 in six months. It could be a free upgrade as well. But, you will have a system that meets the requirements for those six months.

It is never going to be a free upgrade to Win10 from MS. I'd put money on that.

Do not fall for this. MS will never let Win10 go for free. They cant make any money giving it away. This statement just doesn't make any sense. These are just rumors.

The original rumor started with MS giving Win9 to people who purchased a Win8/8.1 License for free.

It may or may not be,read this below dated 9th October 2014(one day old).

Windows 10 Price
Initially, it was thought that Windows 10 would be free to consumers, but that's not the case.
In fact, Microsoft has refused to respond to direct questions as to how much Windows 10 will cost, especially for people upgrading from Windows 7 or XP saying, "We want to talk about the overall product family (at this stage)".
Meanwhile, Indonesian news site Detik quotes Microsoft Indonesia president Andreas Diantoro saying that he has confirmed that Windows 9 - now 10 - will be a free upgrade for all Windows 8 users.
However, the more important question is whether this will be extended to Windows 7 as well as Vista users or not. For an answer to this, one will probably have to wait until 2015.

Regardless I'll be getting Win10 even if I've to pay for it like ALL my previous Microsoft operating systems from DOS 6.22 to present.

I wouldn't count on it, that's for sure.

I guess it depends. Since everyone here is saying MS sold almost no copies of Windows 8 in the first place I don't see how it would hurt to give those 11 or so people a free upgrade :D

I'm sorry, but I can't trust a Christian site where the first person who commented says f*@king.

And then lies:
Below is a brief guide about everything you would want to known about Windows 10 - its release date, price as well as its new features.

They stated 'release date' and have no idea when besides 'late 2015'
Stated 'price' they only mentioned something about an upgrade being free.

Everything you know about Win10 as of right now is pure rumors and speculation.

A I think that it's really funny how MS's new program called Task View has been in OS X and KDE for some time now. Just 1 more Idea that MS has finally caught up to (stolen).

Plenty of sites reporting same info ,another one from Gamespot http://www.gamespot.com/articles/windows-9-will-be-free-for-windows-8-users-report/1100-6422642/

I could post many more from reputable sites but all say same thing more or less.

End of the day we will find out sooner or later.

Make your assumptions if you want...it really doesn't matter at this point. Leaks say it's free...and there may or may not be truth to that.

And if we're going to talk about people stealing, let's just go all the way back and say "you all stole it from NeXT." and be done with it.

We know you hate microsoft and windows, so let's just move on already.

Everyone borrows from everyone else I think. I mean KDE pretty much borrowed its entire design from Windows 95 and up. I remember when KDE was released it was touted as the DE for Windows users. It is still used for distros that will be comfortable for Windows users.

the question was which Windows release ... because a Windows license

Reuse your exiting 7 license if it's valid, or:

8.1 64 OEM ($100)

8.1 Pro 64 OEM ($140) if you need Bitlocker, Hyper-V, or a $10 Media center upgrade (it's a $100 upgrade on non-pro versions).

MS relaxed the OEM restrictions in 8, but I've never had a problem with multiple 7 OEM or 8 OEM keys for reinstalls or full upgrades. You may need to call their automated 800 number to reauth it, but it's simple. Just delay activation until you get your OS and apps configured.

The 8 hate gets overblown. Set 8.1 to boot to desktop and change the Win key to show the Apps (aka full screen start page) screen instead of the Metro tiles and you'll never see Metro unless you want to. Win+X brings up a context menu with every useful settings/config panel. Or install a Start menu alternative for a full 7-like experience. 8/8.1 do have technical improvements over 7, requires less patching, and supports more hardware out of the box.

With the current state of VM software, you can game natively in Windows and do everything else in a Linux VM if you wish. No need to dual-boot. I used to use Linux exclusively but gaming and a m-card tuner are what keep me on Windows. I also used to use Linux to be different, but as I get older I find I don't can't what I use as long it does what I want it to do.

This

If you are retiring one of you current Win7 boxes and replacing it with the new build, Win7 is a no brainer. If you are reusing the old box that you are replacing, put a Linux distro on that one or give the Win10 beta (whatever its refereed as)a try.
If you need to purchase new, windows 8.1 is a fine OS. Like any major change to the UI, you'll get used to the changes and soon enough you won't even notice.

Unless you game...because gaming in VMs, while getting better, is still awful. I'd rather run Windows or OSX and then run everything else as a guest OS...but between Windows and OSX, I don't see a need for anything else. OSX is as close to Linux as I want to get these days. After maintaining a Gentoo install years ago, and trying Arch more recently (I have never seen a snobbier community...) I've had my fill of Linux.
