So I've done some more research and there's two cars that haven't been mentioned yet that I am interested in: Honda Prelude, and Acura Integra. Both seem to have superb ratings. The Prelude would definitely be fun to drive, with solid gas mileage, while the Integra is a bit more economical. Any opinions on these two?

I've owned a mid 90's prelude and loved it. Integra is built on the Civic chassis. I can recommend the Integra as well since i've driven many and known many people with them

Honda or Toyota  Their cars are like freakin' tanks if you just do routine maintenance faithfully.

My 91 Civic gets 33mpg city, is a manual though.

I'd love to buy a Toyota Echo to replace my ancient Honda- good fuel economy (34 city, 40 hwy) and some people are selling models from 2000-05 for $5,000, give or take a few. Info on different years' models

Well just to update this, my car search is over. I ended up getting a loan to about double my price range, and bought myself a nice '01 Acura Integra GS-R with <60k on it. I couldn't be more happy. Lots more power than the cars I was considering before, and 30mpg on my first tank to boot. Thanks all for the help!
