This is for a 98 camry, replacing all 4 tires. I want something that's got decent road-holding. Are the Michelin's worth the extra $$? I plan on getting at least 30k miles on these tires (i.e. before i sell this Car). I live in DC, so I don't need heavy duty winter tires.
BTW why is the BFGoodrich "Luxury Touring" cheaper than the "perfromance" tires? Are all-season performance tires typicaly better?

My choice at Costco are:

Michelin Energy MXV4 195/70HR14 Luxury Touring $103.99
Michelin HydroEdge P195/70R14 All Season Touring $99.99
Michelin X-Radial DT P195/70R14 All Season Passenger Car $83.99

BFGoodrich Traction T/A® H P195/70R14 All-Season Performance $70.99
BFGoodrich Traction T/A® T P195/70R14 All-Season Performance $61.99
BFGoodrich Premier® Touring P195/70R14 Luxury Touring $64.99
BFGoodrich Radial T/A P195/70SR14 All-Season Performance $78.99

Do you know what the difference between the BFGoodrich Traction T/A H and BFGoodrich Traction T/A T is?

Speed ratings.

T 118 mph
H 130 mph

Since it's for a Camry, you're better off going with the T rated tires to save some $$

BFGoodrich Traction T/A® T are much different than the H rating. it's like 2 separate models since it's a different rubber compound. (according to sears website on these 2 tires.)

the H rating is AA traction but only 50k miles. the T rating is A traction, but 60k miles.

i rather pay the extra $ to have better traction in rain and light snow.

edit:
and since you're selling it in 30k miles anyway, 10k tread life difference doesnt matter

My summary review of spending extra money on tires:

Wh not just go buy Bose?

I guess what I am saying is that spending more money on tires is not much more than burning money.

what?

you roll around in a 10,000$ car, that weighs 3000lbs, and travels at 80mph

all of that sticks to the ground with a contact patch that's the size of your palm

and you cant afford to spend a few more dollars for better rubber?

14" tires should not cost you more than $50/tire. I would suggest some Kumho's from the TireRack.

$42 for the A/S 795. Running these in 225/60/16 size for more than a year and they have been great. TireRack slaes people talked me into this tire over more expensive Yokohamas.

A/S 795 at TireRack

Well, that burns your credibility in car threads from here on out.

You heard it here, folks....there's no difference in any tires, so just go to Wal Mart and buy the cheapest ones you can find. They're all the same.

P195/70R14 / Goodyear - Integrity -- All-Season / Buy 3 Get 1 Free! -- $87.00 (each)
Looks like a decent deal: $65.25 ea for all 4.

"BFGoodrich Traction T/A® H P195/70R14 All-Season Performance $70.99"

These are what I have. Unlike the brand of potatoes you buy at the supermarket, tires make a big difference. Most stock tires that cars come with are designed for fuel economy and noise. Dry, wet, and snow handling are not a priority for stock tires and many cheaper tires.

Tires like the Traction T/A are designed for handling in all conditions. I spend a lot of time in my car for my job and even have to drive in very nasty weather, The T/A's are some of the best tires I've driven on.

Don't get cheap on your tires, your life is riding on them. The $284 you will spend is worth every penny. If you haven't had good tires on your car before, even in a boat like a Toyota Camry, you'll be amazed at how much better the car handles especially in wet and snowy conditions.

Agreed. There are two things I don't go cheap on: Tires and brakes...

normally, when u think of sticky tires, you think of higher rolling resistance, which reduces gas milage.

silcia based tires are the magic bullet. Better wet tracton, and 5% increase in fuel milage :Q

and the H-rated Traction T/A tires are made with a silica compound. (the t-rated tires arent)

Michelin Pilots are awesome, but out of the ones you listed get the BFG T/A H rated.

I have the BFG g-force drag radials on my car (The other has Goodyear GS3Ds) and it is one of the best tires I have ever owned, I am impressed with BFG lately.

Second, I just had some Kumho Ecstas put on my Volvo, they were $74 each but so far, they're pretty nice tires.

Also though, I would try to just stick with the stock tire, especially for a civic which is not going to be seeing any track time or extreme handling.

A LOT of engineering and thought goes into what tire choice and the suspension is adjusted accordingly. Stick with the stock tire or find out what other people get for your car first.

I am a Pirelli kinda man. I have Perelli Scorpions on my rig, 275/55R20's on my truck. Great tires. Better then the Goodyears that I had before them. They were a pain to balance, but that was more because of my rims, they are designed to have the weights inside the actual tire, where most other are the side not facing the world. So if the balance is off, they have to deflate the tire and then place the weight, and then retest it.

Plus they have a cool calender
