George R R Martin

Anyone who has read the series will agree, nothing else compares.

Primary recommendation: Wheel Of Time by Robert Jordan!

First book: The Eye of the World. Read it, now!
There are 10 books, a prequel, and at least two more coming. Except the prequel, they're all 600-1000 pages, so they should keep you busy for at least a little while.

Ignore those silly people and their wrong recommendations; everybody I know who's read WoT loves these books. They're simply the best fiction I've ever read.

Other recommendations:
Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card
Dragon's Egg, by Robert L Forward
Starship Troopers, by Robert Heinlein

Same here. My favorite series of all time, and i always recommend it to others, even those who aren't big fans of fantasy (which i'm not).

But another great fantasy series is Robin's Hobbs Farseer Trilogy and the next trilogy, Tawny Man (wierd that amazon doesn't list the 3rd book in that trilogy, since it is out).

Some really different sci-fi is Chung Kuo by David Wingrove. The series is 8 novels long and all of them are about 1000 pgs long. The books have about 100 characters to keep track of, but they are an excellent read.

The 8 are:

Middle Kingdom
Broken Wheel
White Mountain
The Stone Within
Beneath The Tree of Heaven
White Moon Red Dragon
Days of Bitter Strength
The Marriage of the Living Dark

Peace

Everyone always recommends Ender's Game, which is an excellent book, but there does exist other excellent stuff out there and I get a little tired of seeing the same stuff over and over and over. Depending on your taste:

Jack L Chalker: Well World series (there are three separate series), Soul Rider series, Changewinds, and many others.
Peter F Hamilton: Night's Dawn trilogy (The Reality Dysfunction, The Neutronium Alchemist, The Naked God), he's got another series out there as well
Joan D Vinge: Snow Queen, Summer Queen
Daniel Keyes Moran: Continuing Time series (Emerald Eyes, The Long Run, The Last Dancer)
James H Schmitz: Witches of Karres, Federation of the Hub series (Telzey/Trigger stories)
Iain Banks: Culture series (Excession, The Player of Games, and others)
John Varley: Steel Beach, Titan, Wizard, Demon

Quick scifi:

Stark's War trilogy by John G. Hemry

Not so quick fantasy:

The Dark Glory War and Dragoncrown trilogy by Michael Stackpole

Really not so quick fantasy:

The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind

Good luck, enjoy the reading....lots of good suggestions in the previous posts as well, Ender's Game & Ender's Shadow are good, but the rest of the series tales off, Heinlein is good, Hitchhikers Guide is a great book as well.

original Ender series - wonderful! the "shadow" books are pretty bad, though. in fact, that last one made me completely turn against Card (the author). it was just stupid anti-homosexual.

Frank Herbert = fantastic. Dune was the best sci fi. series I've ever read.

ditto on Heinlan. some of his books are a bit predictable, but they're still all great reads.

I read Ender's Game in Kindergarden but it is a great book (series)

I always enjoy Tolkien, a little bit of Robert Jordan, Robert E. Howard (originator of the fantasy wizard and barbarian genre)

Top of my list:

Arthur C. Clarke--Childhood's End (the best sci-fi book I have ever read)
Orson Scott Card--Ender's Game
Frank Herbert--Dune (wasn't a fan of the rest of the series)
Larry Niven--Ringworld Series (not the best writer, but creates an elaborate world)

For some comedy, the aforementioned Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams is hilarious.

If you want something light and fast pace, try the Deathstalker series by Simon R. Green. It has lot of Blood and Gore with backstabling left and right. I am currently do my second read on them and they are still

edit. Woohoo... Crawl my way to the Golden status. :sun:
