They will be used on my pc and mainly for gaming, i dont need a mic as i already have one setup, and i dont reallly want to spend more than £50.

The Headphones will be plugged into an Audigy 2 soundcard.

Ive already got a set of Senniehser px100's for my Ipod Classic and they sound really good on my pc aswell but i want ones that cover my ears.

Thanks

I currently use the Sennheiser HD 497s and plan on upgrading the HD 595s.

I have been very happy with Sennheiser products. They extremely comfortable!

Sennheiser make nice cans.

Let me give you some advice on headphone usage, however.

From listening to headphones I developed Tinnitus - a form of hearing damage that causes
a pitch to constantly trigger in your brain. This happens from the hairs which register sound
being pushed into the wax of the ear permanently by loud or excessively long noise exposure.

This sound can be a whoosh or a piercing pitch.

It is irreversible and completely pervasive. Some people adapt, some get by, some go insane,
some commit suicide. This is not some freak accident either, it is especially common in the
wake of walkman and other headphone use in the past 10-15 years.

Even moderate levels such as your car windows down, the lawnmower, etc can damage your
hearing permanently.

"Yeah right, then everyone is damaging their ears" - Yes, actually they are.

And if you happen to be unlucky enough to develop an audible form of hearing damage, I
wish you luck in sleeping, concentrating and relaxing. If you are lucky, you will only lose
your hearing faculties as you grow older, unable to communicate effectively with the world.

Seriously - this is a problem that is very underpublicized.

I wish I had taken my ears more seriously, so I always take time to share this with others
when it's appropriate.

It only sounds scary because really, it is. Please Please Please read about hearing safety
and take care of your body. Hopefully if you do you will never have to realize how much
trouble you have saved yourself.

Audio-Technica has raised prices to compensate for the weak dollar, and so they've gotten a bit too expensive to really recommend. If you can get a used pair for a good price, then yeah, its worth it, but not new. The A500s are now about $120 I believe, with the A700s about $170, and the A900s at $220. Thats before shipping so add probably another $10 for that.

My father has tinnitus. He played in a band in high school. But I think what truly did him in was being a career Army aviator, flying helicopters and such. He certainly does have ringing in his ears and has a much harder time sleeping. He's 58.

what i find disconcerting are loudness levels of live bands. everytime i come back home from a show, my ears would be ringing for 2 days afterwards.

i know, im young, and loud music is good and fun, but hearing damage is permanent. what surprises me is others dont seem to be so bothered with it...so maybe my hearing was already better than theirs to start with, and now i'll "level off" with the public norm...

i dunno, anyone else muse this from time to time?

When I go to concerts that are close to stage venues I usually use 10-16db dampening silicon in my ears. When I was in my 20s (1980's) I went to many concerts that had my ears ringing for days. Thats when I went with the silicon.

what are these things like and where do i get them? i love something to attenuate the sound (ideally across the whole freq spectrum but thats probably not realistic)

Any decent drug store should have them. Also any decent music/guitar shop will also carry them.

I play in a band and now I have tinnitus. It's a high-pitched whine in my ears and it NEVER goes away. My doctor got his tinnitus from a single loud noise: a an old defective shotgun that he fired once about 30 years ago. My wife's former college teacher committed suicide over his tinnitus.

Now I wear special musician earplugs I got from an audiologist; they transmit sound pitch accurately, but at quite a reduced volume. My hope is that they will allow me to play and not make my hearing worse. You can get all kinds of foam or wax or silicon plugs from a major drug store chain. Or go to a general aviation airport; the place where they rent planes will have the good foam kind (I'm a pilot also).

Wow, after reading this thread I think that I'll forget about buying headphones, and get a good set of earplugs instead.
