RPGs are my think but sadly I don't actually have a lot of experience playing PC RPGs. I've played a lot more console based JRPGs like FF, Dragon Quest, and the like, which I also love. The last PC RPG that I played was Dragon Age Origins which I REALLY loved. Also finished the expansion. So help recommend me some more RPGs on the PC that I must play! Old and new are both fine but I would especially love something new and graphically intensive (to put my 5970 to some good use for once) but of course only if it's a good game as well.

Baldur's Gate 1/2

Diablo 1/2

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1/2

Others will chime in. There's no RPG's that are going to push a 5970.

Yeah sadly so. I put this system together more for the fun of it, I just wanted a killer system! I don't play FPSs which are the primary stressors of vid cards. But I'd like to put this beast to use at some point. I use it funnily enough for distributed computing more than anything now. FFXIV would have been such a game if square hadn't completely fucked that one up :'(

Diablo I and II - plaid both and love them to death. I am totally fucked when DIII comes out :)

Not a star wars fan but I'll take a look at it.

Either am I...at all...
but I ***LOVED*** both KOTOR- start w/ the first one...great games.

I also liked the witcher- tried planescape a couple times and could never get in to it, but most rave about it.

And you've got to play BG 1+2 if you haven't already.

In addition to the one's already posted, I'd add Mass Effect 1 and 2 to your list. At least you'll use a little more of your 5970 with them. :p

Started to play BG II a long while back and got into it but found it REALLY difficult. Will have to go back to it.

I think KOTOR would be a good follow up to Dragon Age

go Planescape Torment (recommend using the resolution mod; I've never used it though) or Fallout 1/2 if you want old school

yeah BG2 takes a lot of effort to get into, there's a shitton of stuff you have to learn. Basically how I did it was read the manual over and over, while in the bathroom and stuff. it's pretty helpful and eventually you'll get the hang of it. it's now my favorite game, I've played it countless times. mods keep it interesting, especially NPC and tactical mods.

how old school are you willing to go? are we talking 3DFX minimum or before?
i'd recommend Might and Magic 6/7. both awesome, 6 is a Sprite engine, but 7 has real 3D!

there are many Turn Based Strategy games with RPG elements:
Heroes of Might and Magic series (3 is best, note the difference from M&M!)
the recent King's Bounty games are great.
Age of Wonders 2
Fantasy Wars is quite challenging but immensely fun.

Elder Scrolls: Morrowind and Oblivion, FallOut 3 on the same engine.

hack'n'slashers: Sacred (1), Titan Quest, Dungeon Siege 2.

if you don't mind to take some time to learn the D&D3 rules, get NWN2 with the Mask of the Betrayer expansion. EPIC stuff.

also, Borderlands is a "First Person Looter" with a mix of RPG/Action.

These don't quite fit your graphic interest, but:

Fallout - and then Fallout 2/3 if you like it

A couple of smaller titles but nice RPG's, Divine Divinity (maybe sequels) and Arx Fatalis

Maybe Gothic series

Maybe Temple of Elemental Evil for D&D type

If you liked Diablo, there's Fate, Sacred, Titan's Gold, Torchlight...

Neverwinter Nights 2 if you want something old school with a bit more depth, it's pretty recent with decent graphics.

Also check out Drakensang.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is my favourite RPG of recent times with a lot of adventuring and action.

Of course the classics are Arcanum, Baldur's Gate games, Fallout and Planscape. Icewind Dale 2 is pretty decent too.

There's the Neverwinter Night's series and BG series as everyone else mentioned, though you'll still have to be familiar (or get familiar) with D&D 2nd and 3d edition rules (NWN 1 = 2nd edition, NWN 2 = 3rd). Though, they're a bit more friendly then Baldurs Gate when it comes to those unfamiliar with the rulesets. Of course, they're not 1:1 to the PnP rules like Temple of Elemental Evil.

As YEPP mentioned, there's the Vampire series. Redemption is more of a party-based isometric clicker in 3D. It's a bit more traditional, and takes place in both medival times and modern times. Bloodlines is the newer of the two and has a Deus Ex feel to it: it's a FPS/RPG hybrid with open ended quests set in modern times. They did a decent job and translating the pen and paper rules, though not great. And the AI in Redemption is something you will cry over :/

Arx Fatalis was a pretty interesting game. Though gameplay wasn't anything new, the world it was set in was unique. Divine Divinity and the Gothic series are some gems in the rough, though can easily be overwhelming. DD is a bit linear so it's not as overwhelming as Gothic, but a fun romp if you like very challenging games. Just make sure if you do go Gothic 1/2/3, you get the fan patches as that really tightens up the loose ends and bugs.

Gothic 4/Arcania is a game that'll push your video card for sure, though that's half good graphics, half bad port job. However, it's Gothic only in name. Honestly it's more on the Adventure side of the genre rather than RPG (ala Zelda vice Fallout). Still, it's fun if you go into the game and don't expect a full JRPG/CRPG experience and more of an adventure type game.

If you want a JRPG on the computer, get Septerra Core. It's a hella fun game (bit grindy at times, though) with some nice sprite based graphics and unique party members. It's definately old school, but is about as close to a traditional JRPG as you can get on the PC.

There's the Fallout series, as prior mentioned, that's really good. Fallout Tactics isn't even half bad if you really, really like the combat from Fallout 1/2. Planescape is solid, as is Arcanum (midget pyromaniac FTW!). Icewind Dale is good if you enjoy the combat side more than the story side of the Baldur's Gate games.

If you don't really dig star wars, you can get Jade Empire. It's Star Wars KOTOR with a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon twist and a different combat scheme -- real time interactive rather than action queues or turn based.

Two Worlds is good if you prefer more of a hack'n'slash approach to your RPGs. The storyline is thin as cellophane, and I can't decide if the voice acting is ye-old-world good or laughable. But, it does have a huge open eneded world, you can ignore the main quest if you want, and there's TONS of different types of arms, armor, and magic to get.

Finally -- I think -- there's the first person RPGs such as the entire Elder Scrolls series and Fallout 3. All good in their own rights, though the Elder Scrolls has been more and more simplified with each version since 2 (I miss being able to jump in a pool and heal :( ).

Baldurs Gate 2
PlaneScape Torment

NeverWinter Nights 1 community modules: Hex Coda 01 and tales of arterra series

Do not play NWN1 itself, stick with the community made modules and maybe the first chapter of the first expansion pack and the 2nd / 3rd chapters of the 2nd expansion. The original game is not up to Bioware standards. But, NWN has always been about the mods.

Borderlands, basically Diablo with guns

If you want to try some MMO-RPGs, both Guild Wars and Global Agenda are some B2P options.

Some awesome RPGS I've enjoyed that haven't been mentioned yet are Freedom Force (by the people behind Bioshock), Titan Quest (by some of the people behind the Age of Empires series), and the Mount & Blade series.

If you have Oblivion check out the Nehrim mod/conversion from SureAI. It's all the more amazing for being free.

+10 Here, Bioware makes a good product. Mass Effect 1 and 2 are simply awesome and very accessible for those of us who hate turn based RPG.

PS:T is a must play, and NWN1 mods make that a worthy purchase (specifically anything by Adam Miller).

I'm skipping the pure hack-n-slash like Diablo and Dungeon Siege, these all have more emphasis on stories and characters.

3D :
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 (2 is well worth playing despite the ending)
The Witcher
The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Oblivion
Fallout 3
Mass Effect 1-2
Neverwinter Nights 1 (now at Good Old Games for $10)
Neverwinter Nights 2

2D : (most at GoG now)
Planescape: Torment
Fallout 1-2
Baldur's Gate 1-2
