I was debating on whether or not i should upgrade now with last year technology or wait for stable future technology like NF4, SLI, etc.

Im gonna upgrade now but have select components that i wont have to upgrade for the next rig like RAM, Vid card, HDDs, Sound, etc.

Right now, im looking to go ahead and buy an ABIT NF7-S v2.0, coupled with a 2600+ barton.

I need to know what hs/f to use that will be sufficient for the CPU and wont be too big for the mobo.
Memory, im confused as hell.

Whether or not to buy 3500 or 3200 ram. Cas latencies are confusing me.
I want 512MB on ONE stick only. I just want one stick of ram in the computer. Do i need to buy dual channel ddr or somthing?

Im deciding between corsair and kingston.
If someone can recommend me a specific model number that will work well and be semi-future proof, id appreciate it.

my price range to spend on memory is about ~$100-$130

I also need a high performance AGP card capable of component out or some sort of external tv out module so i can hook my pc up to my widescreen via component cables NOT svideo or DVI.

thanks for any help

Get 1 Stick of Corsair Value Select 512MB PC3200 for $80 @ Newegg.

Almost ALL motherboards for 754/462 support PC3200 (ddr400). So id recommend that. The PC3500 isn't as widely supported.

BTW: Try to get a Mobile Barton and a regular ABIT NF7-s REVISION 2 NOT VERSION 2. Version 2 is worser I think.

Anything aboe 3200 is out of spec and is never "supported". ALl that is is OCed. Dont get 1 stick, just go for 1gb (2x512) it is well worth it.

For HSF get a THermalright SLK-947U with a Panaflo fan and youll be set. FOr processor it is not worth it getting a 2600+. Just go for an AXP-M 2400+ 35 watt. Best OCing chips out there right now, and cheaper than the 2600.

If you are running windows XP, I would highly recommend getting 2x512. I used to run 512mb and it would be slow when opening applications when a few other things were running. I would check my memory status and it would be at 98% so it's accessing virtual memory which is your hard drive. Hard drive access is super slow compared to memory access.

Then I got another stick of 2x512 and I've never seen my memory usage to past 80% max. The applications would not linger beyond it's standard time to initialize.

Recently I went back to a 512 stick (but upgraded to xms memory) until I can get another stick. I've noticed my memory being sucked up so easily again...ESPECIALLY when running BitTorrent.

If you don't plan on overclocking, all you need is some value series of a good brand (Crucial/Micron, corsair, geil, ocz, mushkin, kingston, etc). Also, you don't need anything over pc3200. Anything that is low-latency or xms or above pc3200 is for overclocking.

im not looking to overclock this system as it will be on 24/7
i like reliability and stability.

eventually once it gets wayy too old, i might oc.. but not now.

the reason for the 2600 is because my freind is selling his for $50, if i can just get him to NOT forget to give it to me.

is there another good hsf combo i can buy from newegg because that hs isnt on the website.

ive decided on mobo, ram, psu, hdd. Just need to know what kind of hsf i can use.
Will silver arctic 2 or 3 work well? Or will i need to buy whatever the newest silver arctic is thats out there??
