based on a recent hankering to listen to things like cibo matto (butterf-er style), the postal service and ugly cassanova.

Oranger is good. They have a strong 60s feel to their music. I've recently become more and more interested in Ladytron. They have more of a 80s synth-pop kinda sound, which I don't usually like, but this group's stuff is pretty good.

Also good:

Flaming Lips
Clinic
White Stripes
Queens of the Stone Age
Rammstein

I know, this is a really odd mix of bands (from German metal to psychedelic pop), but I like a wide variety.

Edited to make sense.

Also, if you like The Postal Service, you might like Benjamin Gibbard's other band, Death Cab for Cutie.

And Isaac Brock from Ugly Cassanova is in a band called Modest Mouse that, while very strange, is also very good.

I assume since you posted Ugly Cassanova and the Postal Service you've already listened to Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie respectively, but on the off chance that you haven't, Modest Mouse is the mutt's nuts. :)

a little known "band" by the postal service guy was "All Time Quarterback." very lo-fi.

other things to check out:

beck's "sea change"
belle and sebastian (personally i hate them but they are a similar genre)
eisley (really good melodies, one of my new faves)
mates of state
john vanderslice
the promise ring

some of you guys are sure recommending weird stuff. tool? i mean, i love tool, but they sure don't sound anything like ugly cassanova.

Some different good music:
Zero 7
Long Beach Shortbus
bfoundation
can't hang
expendables

Prog rock, represent.

good recommendations :)

If you like those, try Big Wreck. My favorite band. They're not real heavy or experimental, but very talented. More like Soundgarden done bluesy, with a touch of Zepplin. Great rock, done right.

I remember years ago reading some website that was describing music as "thislisty" - as in music on the list or like it. Mostly stuff off the 4AD label, but the idea was that someone who liked, for example the cranes, would also like frank black - not exactly the sort of comparison that one would generally make, imho, but it actually worked pretty well.

Sooo ... if you've picked up modest mouse based on cassanova, you've no doubt picked up red red meat too. They're the bluesy half of cassanova - jimmywine majestic is prob the best album, bunny gets paid is okay... skip the first one though. Haven't heard their last one.

Judging from your selsction, you've probably heard all of these already, but I'll give it a shot:

strokes
walkmen
broken social scene
explosions in the sky <-instrumental and farthest from genre, but definitely kicks ass in new ways

Judging from your listed tastes, you find radio prog rock as unlistenable as I do. If you also like the ones I listed, absolutely check out pitchforkmedia.com if you haven't already.
