Recommend me books to read, ATOT

List some books you like and their genre. I'm heading to the bookstore later, and I want to pick up something to read.

I like sci-fi and fantasy (but not star trek or star wars books).

Transall Saga by Gary Paulsen. Easier reading level but a really cool book

(He's the author of Hatchet)

"a short history of nearly everything" by Bill Bryson is a great book that pretty much goes through all of modern history and its scientific discoveries. its my favorite just in front of hitchhikers guide.

Malazan Book of the Fallen by Erikson. It's a series.

I warn you, you may find it impossible to put down. Just get over the hump of the first 3rd or so of the first book, and it's absolutely brilliant.

American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis
Lucky Man - Michael J. Fox
How to make love like a porn star: A Cautionary Tale - Jenna Jameson

The Foundation Series - Issac Asimov
Prelude to Foundation
Forward the Foundation
Foundation
Foundation and Empire
Second Foundation
Foundation's Edge
Foundation and Earth
in that order.

Read the Robot Novels too. They tie in. 😀
I, Robot
The Caves of Steel
The Naked Sun
The Robots of Dawn

i couldn't figure out which one was the first book, so i ended up going with Vince Flynn "Separation of Power" and "Transfer of Power" which are apparently the first two in that series.

American Gods - Neil Gaiman
The Dresden Files series - Jim Butcher
Maximum Ride series - James Patterson

Everyone can recommend you classics all day long - but there's a lot of new, good books out there!

Is that the order they were written? I read them all many years ago, but I thought it started out with Foundation.

Kevin J Anderson gets a bum rap because of the bad-to-mediocre Dune books, but his Saga of the Seven Suns is really really good.

if you haven't read it yet, check out Dune and the first 2-3 sequels (stop when you get to God Emperor), Isaac Asimov's robot books, and the selected works of Robert Heinlein (I've read them all... I thought Stranger in a Strange Land, Starship Troopers, and The Door into Summer were the standouts... I'd avoid anything he published after 1970)

edit: also, anything by Neil Gaiman... American Gods is a good place to start, but Sandman was aaamazing.

edit 2: and on the fantasy front... the Song of Fire and Ice books by George R. R. Martin.

Yeah, read Isaac Asimov. There are a lot of things you may find silly, but all of his books have brilliant stories that tie in wonderfully at the end and leave you thinking about could-be situations for a long time.

EDIT: On a side note, do NOT read The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. There are about 11 books (I think? The last one is unfinished because he passed away recently but his wife has promised to finish it). In any case, they get REALLY repetitive after the 6th book or so. I just stopped on book 7, I couldn't take it anymore.

Not sci-fi or fantasy as I haven't read books in those 2 genres for a number of years, but ....

I highly recommend Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
I've recently been reading through Brad Thor's books. Awesome books if you like Tom Clancy type stuff.
Clive Cussler books are always entertaining, though some more than others.
I've also enjoyed W.E.B. Griffin. His style is also alot like Clancy's.

About 10-12 years ago, I read through everything David Eddings had written. That would fall in the fantasy genre. I remember them being very entertaining. I've also thought Michael Crichton's books were much, much better than his movies. I really liked Jurassic Park. I remember it being a little more "dark" than the movie.
