Recommend me an ultra zoom camera around $600 and one around $400

The place I keep mentioning that burned down now needs to replace their digital camera. For the type of pictures they've historically taken they will probably need an ultra-zoom camera (one with an 8x or better optical zoom)
I'm going to recommend 2 cameras to them. One around $600 and one around $400
I've been looking at Olympus's C-740 and C-750 ultra zooms to fit this bill.

So my question is, how good are these two, and are there any other ultra zoom alternatives in the $400 - $600 price range?

Thanks.

how long a lens do you need?

comparing zoom "X"s is damn near pointless

Well the reason I think they'd want an ultra-zoom is they've had pictures in the past where they couldn't get close enough to get any good detail. I figure with a strong zoom lens they would be able to zoom in closer and get the detail they need.

If you have a nice system that have front mount ring then close-up filters can be use to increase the magnification. Or, just tape the filter onto the front of the lens.

Another way to go is to take the pics with highest resolution then crop to desire size.

I have an Olympus, the C-2100 UltraZoom. I've had it for about a year now. Love it, but don't believe it's made anymore. Have you looked at Steve's Digicams ?

Lowtech, who makes a good camera with a mounting ring?

Klod, I use Steve's digicams and dpreview. Problem is narrowing it down to a few cameras.

right, you need 200mm? 100mm? 150mm? 400mm? "zoom" really doesn't mean anything because you could have a 25 to 50 and a 35 to 70 and they'd both be 2x zoom but the first doesn't even go telephoto.
