I'm in the market for an all-in-one printer in the $200-$300 price range.

I will be primarily using this for scanning and document printing.
auto-duplex scanning & printer preferable.
photo printing occasionally

fax isn't necessary though i dont mind if it has one.
ethernet is not a must. (i can always get a print server if i decide later on to network it)

I've looked at the Canon MP830 and that looks good for $239 shipped at Amazon.

Anything comparable to this? I've read that it kinda guzzles ink like no other plus the ink carts are more expensive.

I'd appreciate any recommendations. thanks

Office Depot has the HP7410 for $249 + tax if applicable
This model is being discontinued by HP but it is an excellent unit.

It has a Legal Size Full Flatbed Scanner
It can Duplex Print and Photo Copy
It can FAX
It can be wired to a Network by cable
It can be used with a Wireless Network (wireless receiver built in)
It comes with 2 Paper Tray
It can Scan to any file or application
Copies can be in BW or Color
And it has some Media card slots for photo cards

If they have all the features you need, I always recommend Canon. They have the best printing quality of any inkjet printers - the ones with under 2000 nozzles are based on the iP4200 and the ones with over 3000 nozzles are based on the iP4300 print engines (both of which have won PC Magazine's "general purpose printer of the year" awards). The scanner function is usually decent too. You'll have to learn about the chipped tanks to save a lot of money in the long run, but the separate tanked models can be run nearly as cheaply as the old i series with available clone tanks or refilling yourself.

As LemonLaw will chime in: "If you can locate one built on the i-series engine, you will have won the Lottery - if you are willing to pay the price (even used ones can fetch higher than original MSRP). Least hassle and lowest TCO of any."
