It's getting close to summer and I need an AC unit of some sort.

My room has windows that slide from side to side, not up and down. My roommate is also concerned about security and worried that someone can just use the partially opened window to break in.

So what are my options? I'm open to alternative AC units, not just window mounts.

You could consider a portable evaporative cooler instead of an AC unit.

There is only one, The Commando 8!

12,000 BTU's of raw cooling power, and, best of all, installation is a snap!

Cut a piece of wood dowel to block the window from opening any further and/or put on some sliding window locks.

If you're going to be gone for a long while you can rig it so you can take the vent in/out of the window and just use it when you're home, of course it will take a while to cool down.

You need a casement style air conditioner. They cost a bit more than regular window units, but I think they work better. And the drip pan on the bottom don't collect nearly as much nasty water, which means they don't smell as bad when you use them a lot. I prefer casement style to regular window units even in normal style windows.

what is the size of the room? does it face the sun? are there computers or appliances that generate heat? do you care more about energy efficiency or safety/looks?

I use a regular air conditioner, with a wood panel that fits above the unit that also slides over the edge of the moving window, and inside the receiving slot for the window. I wedge blocks in the top and bottom of the other end of the window.
I could brute-force it out but it is likely to break the glass in the process, just like any normal break-in.

To condition the air. Air conditioning also removes moisture from the air, something San Francisco has.

I see this said from time to time. A/C isn't just to reduce temperature.

Last summer I stayed at Pigeon Point Hostel on the ocean west of San Francisco. There was condensation on the walls the entire three days I was there. Bad times...
