My fiance's dad is a WWII nut and would like to try a FPS out, however his computer has either integrated or a lower end video card, so I think an older FPS would be the way to go. I tried installing Brothers in Arms, Earned in blood ( i got it free with my video card) but for some reason it wouldn't run, so is there an older WW2 game that may work for him? I know nothing about these kind of games, so I look to AT for your wisdom. :)

thanks all.

There are several different types of FPS... some are simple linear affairs that don't require much thinking but the action comes fast and furious. There are others that are more tactical with open maps and open routes to achieve goals.

Linear, fast paced action:
- Call of Duty (original)
- Medal of Honor

Tactical action:
- Hidden & Dangerous (2 if the system supports it)
- Deadly Dozen (actually quite fun for a lower end budget title)

CoD or MoH. If his comp has an AGP slot, a used 6800 level card won't be too expensive and he can let the game decide whether he likes FPS, instead of possibly having a horrible graphics card ruin the experience.

You could probably pull off Wolfenstein (quake 3 engine) on an integrated graphics card if it is a modern one.

Wolfenstein is a fantasy theme... be warned if you try pawning that off on a WW2 nut, especially a step father. :p

I only played ET for a little while, but I thoughtit was a WWII setting?

Also, it ran fine on my crappy lappy, though the settings were set lower of course.

I finished it a couple of times, I loved it so much. I think that may have been one of the first real FPS' I got into.

As for D3, I never had the (dis)pleasure of playing it. I read too many negative things and I figure if I hated Q4 (which I did) I would certainly hate D3.

I have a thing for game sounds. They're easily as important to me as graphics.

The FPS i've finished can be counted on one hand iirc. HL2, um, CoD, MOH:AA
lol i think that's it
and i've played 10 or more probably. i suck at completing games. When i lose interest i can't force it :)

I am honestly not sure what the exact card is but I may have underestimated it, as he just called and asked me a question about Windows Vista(he just bought it), so if its good enough to run Vista's Aero, could it at least run MoH or CoD? I won't know what he has until I get over there, he isn't sure what kind of card it is. I should have looked when I gave him BiA but I didn't. Next time I'm over there I'll check it out, but I appreciate all the game suggestions. :)

if he can run it, i woud highly suggest Call of Duty. One of the most immersive FPS games I have ever played.

Depending on how low-end the video is, you may be able to run BF1942 (you need DX8.1 support and HWT&L, so the old Intel "Extreme" Graphics integrated chipsets won't work). Better IMO than MoH or CoD, but YMMV.

I played Call Of Duty on a Dell Latitude D600 (has a radeon 9000 for reference). It ran fine. If you are lower end than that, I would say go with medal of honor.

but then he needs an internet connection too then to play online, right? as an older man, he probably wants something immersive, not a bunch of 12 years old running around speaking leet speak and pwning everyone.

The OP actually didn't specify if it was for online or offline play. But yes, BF1942 has little/no single-player aspect to it. I wasn't exactly blown away by CoD's single-player -- the first few levels (the beach assault and in/around normandy) were great, but then it largely devolved into 'run through this big house/base/submarine/etc. all by yourself and slaughter hundreds of enemies'.

Any time you involve other more-or-less randomly chosen people it will be a mixed bag. Some will be idiots, some won't.
