For a while now I've neglected wearing a wristwatch and just used my phone to tell the time. Believe it or not I don't like having to pull out my phone every time I want to tell the time and I actually do still like wearing wristwatches. I have a pair of Seiko watches currently and would like to get another to replace the one I usually wear every day as the number of scratches on the crystal has gotten to annoy me. For reference they are the 7S26-01F0 and the 7N43-9048. Yes I realize they're not high end watches but they've been decent for me. Here's what I'm looking for in a wristwatch:

  • A metal band (can either be a stretch band or a clasp & hook style)
  • Case diameter of 40mm or more (I like larger styles, mainly because I have pretty large hands & wrists)
  • Automatic movement would be preferred (but if there is a good accurate quartz movement I wouldn't mind, have heard good things about the Miyoto OS20 movement)
  • Day & date would be nice
  • A good strong crystal that's very resistant to scratches
  • Price range up to $200
Yes I realize that the price range may limit my choices a bit but as much as I'd love to purchase a Rolex Daytona SS I don't have that kind of cash. Feel free to point me to sites to purchase said watches, not sure if Amazon has the best deals on watches or not.

at the price range I would look into seiko and citizen for good watches. a brief look on ebay, you can get a nice citizen ecodrive with sapphire for your budget. sapphire means it'll be *very* scratch resistant.

at that price you won't get a decent mechanical unless you buy used. imo most mechanicals are overrated anyway.

here's a decent seiko automatic you can get for $212, but the rated accuracy is crap: http://www.seiyajapan.com/collections/seiko/products/s-sarz005

As of late eBay has been surprisingly good for me, I'll take a look as I always have liked the EcoDrive watches. I'll consider the Skagen as well, it doesn't necessarily have to be metal and the style is about right, just not entirely sure about the smaller size compared to other watches I'm looking at.

OP should get a wristwatch. A wristwatch makes it quick and easy to determine the current time at any moment.

There you go, OP. I recommended a wristwatch.

I have one. Seriously just revived it the other day with new batteries. I need gasket though. Alarm, Stopwatch works. The only thing that doesnt work is the speaker. I just check the price of this and its up to $275. I paid $29 bucks for it on sale at target. :). YOur pic shows something but I know what you are talking about.

you don't want automatic. Quartz is far superior is most cases. Automatic are for watch collectors that want a special movement. They are a pain to maintain for the regular watch person as they have to be constantly worn or put on a special case that winds the watch.

You should look at Etsy they have a lot of older watches from great makers in your price range. Make sure you get Sapphire Crystal if you can. Night and day difference in durability compared to other crystals.

My wife bought me a Fender (battery powered) watch on Overstock.com. It works great, and is a moderately successful time piece because nobody knows that fender makes watches.

Can it be polished out? If not, why not just replace the crystal? Maybe even replace it with a sapphire crystal.

I tried polishing it out without much luck. I might try again since I do still like the watch. I'm not so sure if it's possible to just pop in a replacement sapphire crystal or if even such a thing is made. To google I go I suppose.

My watch:
http://www.amazon.com/Skagen-817LBXC.../dp/B004PJZEYY

It's ceramic, not metal, though, and case diameter is 37mm.
Love the matte black look and it does what it is supposed to (tell time).

Maybe not the ideal watch for you, OP, but I'm posting anyway in case someone else likes it.

They're having a Skagen doorbuster here:

I bought THIS ONE at Amazon a while ago for $140 and like it. Skagens are quite thin which I like, as most mens watches have become overly bulky anymore.

i believe there are people/places that have this service, but it'll probably cost more than a new watch to buy the crystal and have it professionally installed.

I'd recommend:
Seiko Black Monster Automatic Dive Watch
or
Seiko Orange Monster Automatic Dive Watch

The Seiko Diver's 200 Meter SKX779

Chunky, dive watch at 43mm case size, with a hefty, oyster-like bracelet. They're different from your current collection. Orange Monster if you want something really different; Black Monster if you want something a little more discreet.

Plus, if you don't mind sticking with the same brand, you're familiar with Seiko and the workhorse 7S26 automatic movement, with day and date. The hardlex crystal is recessed below the bezel, so that'll help with scratch resistance.

It's really good value. 200m depth rating and ridiculous lume. I've recommended this watch to a couple of my friends getting in to watches and they've loved it.

The watch retailer in those links is reputable too. Google around for a coupon code.

In that range I would only look at quartz.

It's definitely worth getting a sapphire crystal watch over a mineral crystal watch. I had a sapphire crystal Accutron watch I wore every day for about 7 years without a single scratch on the crystal, where as it seems like I manage to scratch mineral crystal watches within a week. If this is something you plan on wearing every day I personally wouldn't settle for anything that isn't a sapphire crystal.
