Recommend me a video transcoder

Barfo

Lifer
I'm looking for a program that lets me transcode between different codecs and containers (like mpg to avi and such) easily and is Vista compatible.

Bonus for supporting as many formats as possible, I'm specially interested in Xvid and h.264, should let me crop, resize and cut videos and not crash if I change an obscure setting.

A free program would be nice but I'm willing to pay up to $120 if it's a really good program, thanks.

AutoGordianKnot

google AutoGK

wonderful

add:does divx, xvid, blah, blah, all kinds and includes and automatedly (word?) uses virtual dub.

AutoGK is no longer developed and, last I knew, only supported converting to the avi container.

I would recommend AutoMkv.

And maybe an egg in your beer while we're at it? Or how about world peace, there's an easy one.

Seriously, though, if you find this Holy Grail of video software, please come back and tell us about it.

I sure will but I thought it wouldn't be too hard to find a video transcoder that just works well

Really? I know I've seen screenshots of AutoMkv working in Vista.

NOTE: i have upgrade my compiler to one with better compatibility with Vista.. so any Vista users pay attention

Have you tried the most recent build? There is also MeGui, as tw1164 mentioned. I'm just not a big fan of that program though. And staxrip which is supposed to give lots of control...which it seems you want. Not sure about Vista support though.

 Maybe you ought to do a little research before posting.
