I'd like a video card that will last me a bit until I get a new computer within a year probably. I was thinking of getting a 7600 GT or an X1950 Pro. What do you think? My rig is in my sig.

Thanks.

Price range and latest game you play also what game/s would you like to be able to play ?

Also a 7600GT is in the same price range as many X1900GT and X1950GT's and those 2 offer much much more performance ( and are barely slower than an X1950 Pro ).

Stay away from all of the mid range 8xxx cards atm till the prices reflect thier performance.

Around the price range of the two I listed above. Maybe a bit more if it's worth it. Also, I'd like to be able to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R at 1280x1024 at maybe high if possible with decent performance.

That doesn't answer the question as those cards range from $100 - $200.

Whas the least you want to spend, what you'd feel safe spending and the absolute most you'd spend if it's worth it ?

You have a Viewsonic G90F? Can you tell me if you like it and if you have what Sony calls damper lines? Is it a flat screen (on a CRT)?

For S.T.A.L.K.E.R. either this X1900GT or this X1950 Pro are going to be your best bet I assume seeing as you didn't post a price range to work with.

I'd still say stick with 1024x768 for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. untill you pony up for an X1900XT or better.

Maybe around $200 Canadian for my budget. The cheaper the better cause this is only to last me a while. I saw some cheap 8600 GTs, would they be bottleneck for my computer?

EDIT: EVGA 7600 GT for $129. Not bad?

I like it but it's pretty old. Not seeing any damper lines. Yes it's flat.

My buddy has my old XFX 7600GT XxX that does 695/1810 and he's running S.T.A.L.K.E.R. @ 1024x768 with mid to high detail no AA or AF. and it's barely playeable in many places with his opty 154 @ 2.95ghz and 2gb Mushkin Engineering sample DDR.

With a regular run of the mill 7600GT u can forget about STALKER on high at 1280x1024. Might as well save up for a better card and let your 6600GT carry u on a lil longer.

I have that monitor. It's not truly flat.

Although the front glass is flat, the actual screen is behind the glass and it has some bending issues around the corners. You can never really compare its flatness to say an LCD. Also I cannot use resolution of 1280x1024 or higher for regular reading on the internet or to work in Word or Excel because its just too uncomfortable. The monitor is not that bright compared to an LCD and the whites are not as vibrant. Another major problem with this monitor is glare, but that might or might not be a concern for you. Games play fine at 1600x1200 though. With LCDs so cheap now, I wouldn't recommend it even though I've been happy with it myself (using since 2001). I finally decided to upgrade to 37 inch Westinghouse.

OP, I think you are aiming pretty high to play at 1280x1024 for STALKER considering even 1950Pro struggles in that game Benches

I'd probably get an X1950GT or X1950Pro if you are going to keep the system for another year.

Oh well. Nice to read the comments on the Viewsonic (even though we hijacked the thread). :)

Yeah, I kind of briefly thought about getting a second CRT but maybe next year I'll get an HDCP compliant widescreen LCD to watch movies.

I still like my Sony 17" CPD-E210. It goes up to 1600x1200 which what I use for UT2004.
