I really enjoy Fallen Enchantress. It is a fantasy 4X game. XCOM is also new, and fun, but you are far more likely to have played that one.

I'm playing Fallen Enchantress as well and liking it so far. It's not quite on the same depth as Master of Magic but still an enjoyable game for me. Anno 1404 and the Tropico series are great games too.

You haven't mentioned what games you have played nor any particular criterias that you want.

Yeah sorry about that. I have not really play much 4X outside of Civilization and Total War series.

I played SimCity a lot, some Caesar, Transport Tycoon, RollerCoaster Tycoon, Railroad Tycoon (boy did that series go downhill with Railroads!), most recent game in that genre was Cities in Motion. I have played Anno 1404, but not Tropico, so I will definitely check it out. Same for Fallen Enchantress, as I think Stardock puts out some interesting stuff.

In terms of tycoon games, I'm looking for something with a good amount of depth and difficulty.

I saw that GOG.com has Masters Of Orion 1+2 pack for $5.99. MOO2 is probably one of the best 4x games ever made.

I love Railroad Tycoon 2 and play it yearly or when I'm bored and want a strategy fix. Graphics are old if you can get over that; wouldn't recommend getting RT3 as they 'reinvented' aka 'ruined' the feeling of the previous games.

Someone mentioned Tropico, which might be considered a tycoon game. If you have never played it, do yourself a favor and pick up the series during the Steam Xmas sale. I have hundreds of hours into 3/4; it's like Sim City but you can place individual buildings and homes, with a diplomatic side - build up too much industry and not enough Army, and the rebels will attack. Unless of course everyone is so happy that nobody becomes a rebel.

Gal Civ 2 is my favorite 4X game of all time, so I have to agree with all those that suggested that game as well.

I'd second (or third?) Galactic Civilizations 2. AWESOME 4X game.

Sins of a Solar Empire is also an excellent game, though it is real time (ish).

I have heard good things about Fallen Enchantress as well. Although Elemental was a deeply flawed game, I suspect (and am hearing) that FE is what that game should have been from the beginning. It is next on my list to buy.

If what you are looking for is tactical strategy and you haven't tried Xcom, I would say that would fit the bill nicely as well.

How about Age of Wonders?

Not much diplomacy, but still the deepest strategy fantasy game ever devised (and great to boot). Picked it up on Steam and have more hours into it's dated graphics than all other new games I've bought in the last few months.

that I probably haven't played.
Dwarf Fortress... you know your catching on once you can read the ascii and "see" the 3d in it... or use a viewer plugin... steep learning curve but if you've got a hidden neckbeard or figured out Balance of Power w/o documentation this won't be any worry and the option to adventure through "lost" or abandoned builds is neato too.
