Aside from nominal maintenance costs (alternator and starter in the last two years, so $300ish) and the initial purchase price, my Tacoma costs me under $40/mo to own (registration and insurance) and it doubles as a spare vehicle, not just for truck-ish things. :)

Exactly why I like having a truck around :).

Unless you really need a hauler all the time, it would be a lot cheaper to rent one the few times you need it. You can rent a pickup from U-Haul (or similar) for @$20.00 a day.

Lowe's offers free (or very cheap) delivery in most areas.

True, but the 20 is misleading. Minimum 7$ insurance is mandatory, plus refueling, plus .59$ a mile. 30$ will be your absolute minimum output.

Good mileage and roomy ... does not compute !!!

Already mentioned, but a Honda Odyssey (with seating for 8) at 24mpg is a better bet than any truck or SUV short of a 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 Eco-diesel which averages 28mpg (but costs around 41-51k).

41 to 51k if you order the SUV version. The pickup version can be had for around 30k. The problem will be finding a dealer that will order one for you. For reasons that were never explained to me, two local dealers were unable to order me a truck, even though I was standing in the showroom with a check in hand.

I'm kinda tempted to keep track of how often I use my truck for truck things - would be an interesting cost analysis. Used it for ~1.5 hours and ~20 miles yesterday, which paid for it for the month.

Well there is the whole side benefit of not having to drive a truck...

You have to refuel a truck you own, too.

Anyway +1 for cargo trailer.
