Recommend me a smartphone under $50 w/o contract (used is fine) Primarily for mp3s

I'm really in the market for a mp3 player, but it seems silly to buy one when I can go with a smartphone for nearly the same price. I don't mind a used one and it doesn't need to be fancy. I'd prefer an android though.

Also wondering if it's a good idea to grab a cheap broken/bricked phone from eBay. I'm a tech, so it shouldn't be an issue to repair it depending on the issue.

Or if you prefer a smaller format, I'd have a look at the old Palm Pre or Pixi - The OS is great, although you are storage limited as there is no SD card. The Pixi Plus has wi-fi - old Verizon phone.
