I have a company that I do business with who sends me large CAD files via a link in an email. I click the link and it takes me to the download. I believe the authentication is embedded in the link so it would not be publicly browse-able without the link. The server sets the share to expire within 24 hours also. I would like to have this same capability but I just can't seem to find the right key words to get a search to produce results. I am wanting this for business purposes and I want to host the files onsite. Anyone know of a server package that would let me create a temporary share that can only be access by a person clicking on a link that the server generates for me when I select the file to share?

SFTP or FTP :) filezilla.

i suggest FTP with TLS/SSL or SFTP since they encrypt. you can setup directories.

or buy a cheap hosting package (dreamhost or 1and1) and create sandboxed ftp accounts. your main account can access the subaccounts but they can't move out of their accounts. with 1and1 i can get about 2-10 meg per link, so if they upload 20 files at once i'm getting about 100-150megabit. dreamhost is a bit slower.

sftp/ftp for the win :)

Emulex, I have an sftp server now. What I wanted was a way to securely send a large file to an email recipient without the hassle of setting up an account. I also ran into a problem where one of the companies I deal with blocks ftp traffic through the web browser so the other person could not use ftp without installing a dedicated client. This quickly became more trouble than it was worth and I had to run someone over with a flash drive. imagoon got me on the right track as I did not know what the term was that was used to describe what I was looking for, "Managed File Transfer". I am now trying out Adobe SendNow to test that service to see if it will cover me without the need for a new server.
