i have this uncle. he is an antique dealer. he lives in a little cabin in the middle of the woods, in the middle of Maine. He's never, ever used a computer before in his life. im thinking its about time he gets a computer, and since he drives all over the country, he needs a laptop. he just needs it for web, email, basic stuff. maybe something under $500. it also needs to be really reliable because if it breaks, he will have no idea what to do. also, ive had some really really bad experiences with dell laptops breaking on me recently, so im not to happy about dell. does anybody have any suggestions, i dont really know anything about laptops.

thanks.

Hmm well i was going to suggest dell b/c they have a nice price/quality ratio...or at least that's what i thought. How'd they break on you?

cheap laptop + really reliable laptop = oxymoron

My Dell has been flawless so far (cost me $1500)...my previous Dell only had the HD go bad which was replaced quickly and with no trouble from Dell....so I too would recommend Dell.

IMO, you are not going to get a laptop, that is worth it's salt for $500. Spend a bit more, so he won't have to be trading up in 6 months.

you can get a refurbished one? I tihnk I saw a 350$ laptop form bestbuy today in the ads check bestbuy or compusa or w/e you go to. they should have a cheap laptop

IBM still hasn't figured out that they need to put the windows key on their laptops. I use window key shortcuts all the time like Windowkey + R for run, windowkey + f for search. I don't know why they refuse to put them on their laptops, but I won't own one until they do.

yeah, i was thinking about a thinkpad. i have an old one (from work so i cant sell it), with a p3 1ghz. its been really durable, never any problems. its also perfectly good for the stuff he needs to do. i saw one, p3 1.13ghz on the forums for $385. is that a good price?
