Recommend me a quiet hard drive

What happened:

(1) Had a WD Caviar SE 40 GB that was originally whisper quiet but recently started making constant high pitched noises.

(2) RMA'd the drive and got replacement refurb from WD. It has the same problem! Just not as loud.

(3) Am currently running off an almost 5 yr old Maxtor DiamondMax 40+, which is quieter than the WD! :|

What hard drive should I get to replace the WD Caviar SE? My requirements are: (1) Quiet - I value this more than raw speed (2) 7200 RPM - I need good, but not top performance (3) Parallel ATA100 or better. (4) in the $50-60 range.

I have done a search, and the two manufacturers that are recommended in threads for quiet drives are Seagate and Samsung.

Samsung P80

Seagate ST3800

I've heard the Seagates are more consistently quiet than the Samsungs. Any comments or additional recommendations? I

My new diamondmax is out of question for ya, youd just go from a whine to a grumble sound.

Quietest HD's ive had are in my old dell, seagate 7200 ata's.

I'd go with the Seagate for the 5 year warranty. Unless you have a super quiet system, they are both quiet enough to remain virtually unnoticed.

Up! Would appreciate feedback from people who have had any experience with the Samsung and Seagate drives 🙂

I may be in the minority category as a Seagate user, but 3 out of the last 5 drives failed in less than a year. I went with Samsung and have no regrets at all. The Samsung is as quiet or maybe quieter than the Seagates, so you know what my choice would be if I were in your shoes.
