Hello ATOT,

I'm graduating in May with a degree in software engineering and am wondering what degree to go after next. I had a job lined up, but that fell through (they told me for 3 months they were going to hire me, but called me up over break and said they weren't). Hopefully, I ll be able to find another one before graduation. (Anyone looking for a developer in CT ?)

My professor's seem pretty much split. 1/2 recommend an MBA (allowing easier transition into management, hopefully more money, greater range of skills, and a cake curriculum). They don't recommend a masters in software engineering because they believe it will just be a rehash of my last 4 years with the newest technology.

The other half recommend a masters in software engineering or comp sci for obvious reasons. More experience, greater skills, blah blah.

Anyone have any recommendations ?

Neither. Go for a masters in Library Science or a MSI (Master of Science in Information).

Why ? Is the MSI the same thing as a Masters in Information Systems ?

yeah, going into a masters in the same field you did your BS in will pretty much be a rehash of what you learned, unless you are doing a research masters. However, even then, you will still rehash some of what you learned. I can tell you now that software is gonna boom again soon (not as big as before, though).

A Masters in Information System will lead to opportunities in consulting and management down the line. If you want to go into the management down the line, you could also look into a masters in Business Administration.

It really depends on what you want to do. Do you want to go into consultation or management or do you want to concentrate on software engineering for your whole career?

Some schools will take you without work experience. Some prefer a few years of work experience.

I would recommend a MBA, but I would get some real work experience first...
