Well, my wife absolutely loves the pictures she is getting with the K100D, and if you have used it you know the incredible pictures it produces.
However, as all of you DSLR users can attest, carrying all your gear can get old. A DSLR is bulky and heavy, and sometimes it is just easier to have a more portable camera as supplement. We need a second camera, a point ans shoot to supplement the K100D, but there are some requirements. I already read many reviews and I am still looking for such camera.
1) Need to have decent low light performance for indoors.
2) At least 5x optical zoom
3) Needs to have a decent flash recharge time.
4) Needs to have at least a P/M mode, or the ability to select at the very least white balance.
5) Needs to have decent macro mode, 5 cms or less. The pentax prime 35 mm f/2.8 takes incredible pictures at close-up, and yes I know that a point ans shoot will not match this $550 beauty, but it need to be decent at least. This is almost a must
6) Needs to have a 3:2 picture size, this is a must. Almost all the pictures are printed as 4 x 6 for albums.
For what I have found out, Fuji lead the pack for #1. #2 is not a must, and several cameras have it, so not too much of a problem. Several cameras have decent flash recharge time, with canon coming at the rear. Things start getting complicated with #4, as many Fuji cameras allow little degree of customization. Furthermore, the macro requirement is not that good on Fuji. To make things more complicated, the 3:2 size leaves almost everyone out, as I only have seen kodak and fuji as alternatives.
The K100D belong to my wife, and I have a kodak Z712 IS as my camera, used mainly for outdoors and sports. The Z712 is a very fast performer, has P/A/S/M modes, produces very good images in good light, has optical IS, an EVF, produces vibrant colors, has a 3:2 picture size and its lenses are probably the best in a non DSLR. On the negatives, while smaller than a DSLR, it is not a pocket camera, macro mode is awful with very slow AF, noise reduction is excessive, something more noticeable in low light, and white balance is not that great. Is a very good camera, no question, but still has some faults, being the main one the pocketability issue.
I have tried several others, the olympus P&S produce very good images (we had a D565Z before the K100D) but have zero customization. The canons P&S have a lot of custom options and features, but they have the slow flash recharge time issue, and the SD750 for example produces very grainy pictures at anything over ISO 200. The smaller fujis are very basic.... the kodaks have a lot of features and we like the rich colors, but macro mode is awful and the noise reduction artifacts are hard to swallow. The pentax P&S don't have a 3:2 size and are very basic....... HP are very basic and IQ is not that great.
Give me a suggestion. Anything from sony? Nikon? GE? samsung?
Keep in mind that I might be exaggerating in the cameras flaws I have mentioned as the reference is the K100D.
If no camera exists that meets everything I want, what would you suggest and why? The supplement doesn't have to be very slim, just a regular size P&S. 3:2 size is the main factor here.
