recommend me a life sciences project...

Time to replace the little blue pill (UD).

The projects that seem like a good fit for me would probably be:

Find-a-Drug, Folding@Home, or World Community Grid (not sure if we have a TeAm there....)

I have never run any of these projects so maybe you guys could help me out a bit.
UD has had a lot of problems of late. You have probably noticed our team has pretty much fallen apart. It would be nice to find a project with a stable platform that doesn't require much user intervention.

Any input will be appreciated.

BTW - I have 8 boxes in my home ( a couple need a little maintenance to bring em back online) and can get maybe 2 more as well.

I've found FaD to be very stable on my boxes... it's well-behaved, takes care of itself if it loses internet connection (meaning that the client makes work for itself if it can't download new work and you get credit for it), stats are pretty stable... I had it running on 24x7 crunchers and it just ran for months without needing reboots or any other attention

Hmm, isn't World community grid basically using the UD-agent but with a different project-application, meaning would guess has the same weaknesses as the UD-client.

As for find-a-drug, AFAIK this is the only DC-client that have totally locked-up computer so had to reset multiple times, so...

Of these 3 projects the only can recommend is Folding@home.

But, another possibility is to run Predictor@home, and when Folding@home have finished their BOINC-application you can share multiple life-science-projects at once. Another BOINC-project currently in development is Lattice that will have multiple life-science-applications.

Predictor@home have wu with 7-day-deadline, but normal crunch-times is less than 1 hour so this shouldn't be a problem. Just like other BOINC-projects you have built-in caching, multi-cpu-support, multi-project-support and service-install. Computers can be remotely monitored/controlled one at a time by the included BOINC Manager, or to look at all computers at once you can use BoincView. On the web-pages there's also detailed result-info so can easily check if everything works as it should.

Thanks for the input guys....(keep it coming!) :)

Hey Rattledagger, yes WCG uses the UD client, but that isn't the problem with UD. UD has been having major database probs. WCG is run by IBM and is doing protein folding.

FaD lockup is not good though. (possibly OC related?) Anybody else have issues? Really the only time I get any kind of lock-ups are completely software related. (OC past the point of 100% stability is unacceptible for me)

Dunno... I've not had any lockups, but then I don't OC either... Dells don't OC all that well :p

lol... a cruncher is a cruncher :) I've got some pretty nice deals off their outlet site, and they are pretty solid in terms of reliability.

My latest acquisition is a SC420 server that I'm setting up to replace the current TeAm Stats Server... 3.2g P4... it's running two instances of FaD (oh yeah... the client is fully SMP aware and adjusts accordingly on its own... no messy multiple installs/directories...)... my kid's Dell that stopped working on him has been running solid since Saturday by simply reseating the ram....

I definately agree with you here.... Of the boxes @ my disposal 3 are Dells, oldest being a PIII-933. None have ever had a hardware problem. (knock on wood )

I have Find a Drug running on 16 machines and have never had it lock any of them up.

It's a long time have checked-out UD, but in my experience you can only run one instance on multi-cpu and you've got a crazy point-system...

As for FaD, since doesn't overclock it's unlikely any problems is due to overclocking... :p
Besides, haven't had any problems running a combination of BOINC alpha, seti, seti_enhanced, einstein, lhc, predictor, folding, cpdn slab-model and sulphur-cycle-model...

More likely is, since FaD uses opengl, the crash is due to mediocre graphics-card...

If you go to the [FAD] Setup Panel, you can "un-check" the Use Open-GL option.

I've been running [FAD] on my systems (currently 21) 24x7, some for over 2 years and the only lockups I've had, I've traced back to OC'ing. (I've got one old Dell, 700MHz Celery, and yes it's OC'd to 780MHz)

I can't comment on any of the other projects, since the only DC project I've ever run is [FAD].

Well, Right now I am testing FaD on my fastest and slowest box.

The software seems a little awkward but that's not a problem really.
WU's definately go pretty fast.....

I've run [FAD] on an old laptop (running on AC), P100, 16MB RAM, W98SE, 800MB HDD -- slow, but no problems.

As for the speed of the WU's . . . depends on the project, Query, CPU. Some I've had finished in less than 10 min. on a 3000+, some have taken up to a week on the same box.

One whole minute. Guess that old age is kicking in.
Besides I'm trying to make a deal on another 2.8P4 the same time as posting here. Gotta keep the Rebel Alliance moving up in the ranking you know and knock some more of that old wood down a little more you know.:p

Thank Gawd! :p

Should go see what kind of trouble I can get the Ol' Fart Port into today. :D Last I saw, he was "hookin'" up with Hob in the "Deep Thought" thread over at the [FAD] forums. ;)

Me too :D

F@H is certainly capable of 'hands-off' usage. (console client anyway, don't know about the graphical client)

We are due for some growth and it would be great if you could lend-to for this team!
