Samsung has the best lineup this year followed by Toshiba.

Sony's lineup is good too but as usual overpriced, seeing as the W4100 costs more than the A650 from Samsung or RF550 from Toshiba and is only an 8 bit TV compared to both the Sammy/Tosh which are 10 bit. The Z-Series from Sony looks nice, but manages to be so crazy priced I just dont get it.

Anyways, 40A650 should be findable for under 1700 and is your best choice IMO, though a stretch to the 46A650 would yield a nicer screen but would up your budget 200 bucks.

ive been looking at the sammys, and they seem to be a good candidate for my new tv. but since you mentioned toshi, i will check them out too.

btw, what is so special about the the 40A650 other than the 10bit, in comparison to the other tvs?

Sony XBR's are bar none the most gorgeous TV's I've seen...but you'll pay through the nose for 'em.

Samsung and Toshiba are great as well.

Actually $194.24 to be exact. 😉 I'd try and stretch your budget and get the 46" Samsung if I were you.

I actually like the Samsung 650 series better than ANY LCD out right now, including the Sonys. Now when the XBR8s come out in September, that might be another story. 😉

I would rather have the 46" Samasung A550 than the 40" Samsung A650, unless your major purpose for buying is to play high resolution games (and even then it would be close).

The extra 6 inches is significant. The difference in contrast ratio and the 120hz is not so significant, at least to me, and certainly not something I'd be looking for in a 40" tv.

Why do you want LCD over plasma? I'm just curious because I'm trying to decide which to buy.

plasma tends to get hotter than lcd, and i believe they draw more power.

btw, i went to bestbuy the other day and checked out the 120hz tvs... they looks weird, i am not really used to seeing movies that are like a video. movies on 120hz just seems unnatural to me.

Another vote for samsung. I have a Sony KDL-40V2500 and it came with 2 dead pixels and i'm not very happy about it.

That's mostly just the commonly spread information.

Truly, Plasmas pull a bit more power but not as much as people make it out to be. The reason its difficult to compare is because the current draw of plasma tech changes drastically during use while LCD is fairly constant. Plasma's will generally use much less power when watching a mostly dark movie whereas LCD's will still be using their "max". If a plasma is displaying an image with a lot of white or color, it then may exceed a LCD by a fair margin in power. However, seeing as its generally within a "lightbulb" or two, I don't think most people should be concerned.

Heat issues are also generally overplayed. I have personally experienced some plasmas which are like radiators....then I have seen plasmas who seem to hardly give off any heat at all. However, given that they take similar amounts of power, the heat from each should also be fairly similar.

I personally have mixed reactions to the motion enhancer effect. While the benefits of 120Hz processing should be pretty much indisputable....the motion enhancer makes things feel "sped up" to me. However, the effect does make it feel "real". I am still uncertain of whether or not the effect is beneficial.

to me, the motion enhancer make things feel slower.

Well power usage isn't a concern because it's included in my rent.

Hm well....to each his own 🙂

okay, looks like its either the 40" samsung A650 or the 46" samsung A550. leaning a little more towards the A650 since theres more features even though it cost just a little bit more.

Man, I'm so jealous of your tv prices down in the U.S. A Samsung 46A650 is...get this...$3000 up here. Sucks.

WOW!!

I just bought a Samsung 46A650 for $1699 at Electronics Expo in NJ. They had it in stock and I took it home same day.
Wife wouldn't settle for the deal the salesman gave us at $1780. We were driving out of the parking lot when the salesman came running out of the store and offered $1699 but no financing at all.

Yep, this years Samsungs are great. I went cheap as I barely watch TV but play 360 a lot so I went with the 32" A330 model. I love it and got it for under 500.
