I've been traveling a decent amount lately, so I decided to change to one laptop for work and home use. This means I need a laptop bag.

I need something not huge but big enough to carry a laptop, organizer, couple chargers and whatever other random shit I need for that day. I think I would prefer a backpack but a messenger type one isn't out of the question as long as it can fit all my shit.

I'd like to keep it < $100.

do you ever fly? if so, one of those unzip and lay flat TSA checkpoint bags is what you want.

How big is the laptop?

Back when everyone was getting 17" monster laptops for CAD work my old company was including these wenger backpacks. http://amzn.com/B000VOC90Y

They're awesome bags. Built super tough.

But if you don't have a 17" laptop, I'd go with something smaller.

Standard 15.6" laptop.

When I fly, I fly private. So I don't have to deal with TSA bullshit. I'm more worried about day to day carrying. I want it big enough to hold shit but not so big that its a pain to lug around.

Swiss Gear backpack.

I don't remember the model, but mine was about $80. I love it.
I've had mine for about a year and a half. I travel a lot for work, including 4 overseas trips last year, and the bag still looks brand new.

One note of caution: I bought the 15" laptop bag first (since that's what I have) and it was a very tight squeeze. I returned it and got the 17" bag and it's perfect.

That's actually the one I have. It's not super big and like I said, the smaller version is a very tight squeeze with a 15" laptop.

I like the Timbuk2 ones. I actually own 2. 1 I use for work. The other I use for my personal one.

I love my Ogio Metro laptop backpack. But I don't think they make it anymore. I use it for my day-day work bag, travel bag, gym bag. It's really held up over the years. I generally like Ogio's products, though their Gymbo gym bag is kinda dumb.

I paid maybe 1/4 what you are prepared to pay for my backpack, which has a laptop compartment and enough extra compartments for most anything. Very convenient. I think I got it at Costco. I have a couple of standalone laptop satchels, also business luggage that will accommodate a laptop, but much prefer the backpack approach, and I think its safer in more ways than one. A dedicated laptop pack advertises that you have a laptop in it. A backpack, not the case. Also, I'm less likely to drop it, and even if I did, the protection of the backpack is much better. The brand is High Sierra.

If you want to up the budget (a lot), I'd highly recommend something from GoRuck. Bought one last year and the thing is a beast. I've beat the hell of it so far and it still feels and looks as good as the day I got it. Plenty of room for everything I need and more.

I do not recommend any HP backpacks, i bought one at like 20, one of those big sale, all the interior pockets ripped, all I was carrying was 2.5 hd/ssd in them. Strap is ripping, etc.

My swiss gear lasted 3-4 years and still has no issue. I use a surface pro so its silly to use a big backpack for a small device, that's the only reason I stop using my swiss gear backpack

i just got one of these for my 5 year anniversary at work. switched to it for my international carry on bag. (i fly about 15k miles a month). I was using a large timbuk2 messenger bag and this cheap backpack has actually impressed me. It just needs a little bit more organization which will come with one of these in its center pocket. https://www.cocooninnovations.com/grid.php

GridIt thing is interesting.

Like I said earlier  for Ogio.

I fly private but I don't want to spend more than $100 on a computer bag...

Why not get something that will last forever?

because leather is a stupid material for a bag. gets wet, does not get oiled, heavy, etc.... I love leather for certain things, but not bags. I cant throw it in the washer to clean it, and we really don't like hipsters around here. D:

plus, by the time a normal 50 dollar backpack wears out, you will have different carry needs and want something new that fits your new products. why spend 500 on something you will not like/ will not suit your needs in a few years.

Just another thought, have you looked into just getting a sleeve and using your existing bags?

EDIT: That grid-it thing looks awesome.

To each his own, but when does a bag get wet? How fast does nylon get dirty? Does leather ever look dirty? Heavy? I like nice things, so I'm a hipster? Define that please... Two things to giggle at now. So win.

Maybe you live in California or the Sahara but in many places precipitation falls from the sky which has the tendency to get people, and the possessions they are carrying, wet. I also find leather a bit easy to scuff and I am not always gentle with my carryon when shoving it under the seat in front of me (or in many other cases.)

And if nylon gets dirty cleaning it is easier than leather. Just throw it in something that'll spray water on it
