Recommend me a good multiplayer (online) game

I've been out of the hardcore PC gaming scene for years and years now.

Just recently, a friend and I began rekinding our first love of nearly a decade ago by playing the demo versions of Quake 2 and Quake 3 versus each other (with a few bots thrown in, for good measure).

Anyways, after a few weeks of this we are bored. Are there any other newer games out (relatively cheap, free, or with playable demos) that have an online multiplayer or player-vs-player mode? Shoot-em ups are great, but not required. What would you guys recommend?

If you've been out of the loop for a decade I'd recommend you stick with the bots. Just kidding, Counter Strike Source can be purchased any where for around $20 or less. Without a doubt one the most played online games ever, and it's still getting bigger with more and more mods to the game. So if you get bored of hard core scrimming you can go blow off steam by playing Zombie mod, or go for the win in a Gun Game match or a break glass level. That and the system requirements shouldn't be much of a problem unless you haven't updated your computer in 10 years either. There are several other games I could prescribe but I'll let someone else do it. For $20 CSS is a must have.

in terms of free (and I don't play these anymore, so no clue on the player base), there's Return to Castle Wolfenstein and America's Army.

Continuum!

More seriously, get the Orange Box! TF2 is a very fun FPS when you know how all the classes work.

Battlefield Heroes is going to be free, when it comes out.

For cheap, keep checking Hot Deals and GoGamer.com for good sales.

the question that needs to be asked is are you going to be playing with only your friend or are you wanting to go out to online servers and play with other people?

Try out the games on ijji.com. While the quality isn't amazing, you can't beat free. All the games are owned by a Korean company that follows the typical Korean online model (free play + optional cash shop). Gunbound and soldier front are pretty good. SF in particular is a good poor man's CS although sniping is a little imbalanced. I actually liked GunZ as well but it's pretty mindless unless you try playing Korean style (which involves some tricky button combinations)

Well Sins of a Solar Empire is pretty hot right now. Its a newer game just released and isn't that cheap but its worth the money. It is pretty much built for online play and offers hours of solo play as well. 4X RTS hybrid.

Or you could get Team Fortress 2 which is hot as well. It cost 30 bucks off steam. Counter-Strike : Source is cheaper, and less hardware needed to play so that might fit your bill too. I like having CS:S and Day of Defeat: Source around for when I feel a need to shoot something.

You cant fail with the orange box, theres half life 2 deathmatch (my fav) it now has puzzle maps with up to 32 people on it, apparently like the garys mod thing. Theres also team fortress 2, its pretty good also.

If you like RTS then give company of heros a try, its getting a big patch on the 18th to fix all the server stability issues and solve the minor balance issues the game has. Online is a lot of fun with that game, its best if you have a friend to 2v2 with although public games with random people are fun too you sometimes get teamed with braindead people.
