Because I'm a nice guy (and my boss will be paying me for it), I agreed to find him a decent laser printer for his personal computer. Being out of computer sales for 3+ years, I have no idea whats being offered up these days. What I'm looking for is a printer available through Best Buy/Staples (local stores) around ~$250 thats also USB . No need for funny paper sizes (8x11 will do). I'm not so sure I would personally go with HP. The last lasers I remember (LJ100se) felt kinda flismy. My HP 6L is still going somehow (I print maybe 50 pages per year)

i'm a student at the local university (where i happen to also work) and we have a 6p attached to just about every computer in the college of business. there's a couple of other models (i'll let you know when i get in tomarrow). other than that, we have xerox machines for color laser (typically the xerox 8400)

If you want some of the best output and excellent PostScript, look at Lexmark. If decent print quality will do and you want lowest cost over time, look at Mita/Kyocera Ecosys models. The Kyocera toner actually polishes the drum during use.

Brother HL-5040 and its successor (5045? 5050?) for $175-300 depending on whether you can find a Hot Deal. Samsung has some decent lasers much cheaper (starting under $100), but slower, inferior paper handling, and toner carts are smaller and harder to find than Brother.

For over $500 I'd still recommend an HP, but their sub-$300 printers are flimsy and always behind the others in quality and performance in the reviews I've read.

also search "laser" since this has been asked at least a half-dozen times this year.

for around 250 buck you wont be able to find a new xerox machine. but I do know xerox is selling their phaser 6100 for pretty cheap. Its a color laser though and might not suit his needs. and its a "tad" over the $250 budget

I did a little research and apparently the Lexmark aren't as consistently good across the board as they once were. But those that are good are still top notch. Kyocera is still low cost per page over the long haul (500,000 - 1,000,000+ pages). Also Brother is generally good, but they've had some design problems in the past (setting themselves on fire, etc.), so I still am not comfortable recommending them.

HP 1300 is currently selling for $399 and has a $100 rebate making it in effect $299.

I know that's more than you had budget for up front, but only 50 more than the over-all budget.

It's a great printer. HP's are solid in my experience.

Also,

Keep in mind as to whether you need a print server or not and how the business is going to grow around that printer.

i Own an HP 1012 and love it :) (got it like 6 or 8 months ago i guess)
low price, fast, well built, not too expensive to replace toner cartridges, etc. what more could you want
havn't checked up on the newest ones lately but i figured i would add my 2 cents :)
