Which? DSL or cable? If its DSL, westell 6100 is quite good. I got one for about $50 or so on ebay.

Own/rent. Doesn't really matter. In matters of money, depends how much the charge is and how long you are going to keep it. If its $2 a month to rent and buying will cost you $50, if you are going to use it less than 2 years, better to rent. Cable does the renting most of the time, usualy with DSL you just buy or they give you one when you sign up.

As for performance, again doesn't make much differance. 99% of DSL modems (and I think cable too) are 10mbit ethernet inside since majority of home internet connections never go faster.

Unless you get substantial discount from your ISP you better of taking it from them.

Otherwise.

Cable Modem can be found in megastores.

Which one? The cheapest that is docsis compatible.

Good DSL Modem here: Model 5515 - Ethernet ADSL Bridge Modem.

P.S. Do not get a USB Modem even if it is Free.

lol, I love the USB networking crap they shove on the unknowing masses.

I would say rent, because then if it fry's/goes bad/random upgrade breaks it then you don't have to replace it.

If you rent for $5 a month, over a year chances are you would have paid the modem off. Yet you will still have to continue to pay the ISP for modem fees. In the long run it saves you money. If you switch from DSL to cable to DSL, like I did you will also have a modem for each switch. Basically $150 bucks for the two modems. Saving me a couple bucks over the years but I won't need to purchase additional modems. The DSL modem was kinda on a whim as my router and the ISP provided modem wouldn't share out a connection for some reason.
