Recommend me a good camera strap

Hate the strap that came with my D800. Would like a bit more padding and softer if at all possible

Also some way to semi-quickly detach it for when I put the camera on a steadicam rig.

I have a blackrapid RS-sport and a the old luma loop and out of those two I prefer the luma loop for most things except in a situation where I would have to run with the camera

not really a strap, but it will attach to anything with a sturdy strap (a good backpack, or belt, or etc) and they have plans to allow it to attach to other stuff too (car mounts, etc)

otherwise, i have a black rapid rs-7. i've been out on field trips and wore the rs-7 for ~8 hours with only minimal discomfort
there are cheaper knockoffs on ebay and amazon that should provide a similar experience. The knockoffs (quick rapid, etc) tend to have small pouches that will fit SD cards and batteries which might be an added bonus.

the blackrapid has more padding than the luma, which would make the luma more flexible. I would expect the luma to form fit better with lighter camera load outs
the luma's definitely look more refined, without the somewhat tacky giant R logo

Optech is kind of the standard for neoprene straps. I have a couple of them, and the quick-detach mechanism is handy for when you want to take the strap off.

I have heard good things about the Crumpler Industry Disgrace as well.

Blackrapid/etc. are some interesting designs if you want some "alternative" straps for carrying your camera in a different way than just around your neck, switching from one carry method to another quickly, etc. But the Optech and Crumpler are pretty much standard neck straps, just upgraded. From Optech, I prefer the "Utility Strap" design over the straight straps.

Keep in mind though, a thicker/padded strap will take up considerably more room in your bag. Depending on the size and configuration of your bag, this might be a nuisance. I usually keep my 5D in a Think Tank Digital Holster 20 (which has a snug fit around the camera), and I really have to fold up my Optech Utility Strap to cram it in there.

This is true - if you have a small bag, a larger strap could cause grief.

Any of the above solutions are probably fine for walking around (I have the Op/Tech Super Classic, which is perfect for me), but if you plan on hiking or backpacking and want your camera handy (and not in your hand), the Cotton Carrier Strap Shot is a rather clever setup: http://www.cottoncarrier.com/new-product-the-cotton-carrier-strapshot/. I just got one and am in the process of deciding if it works for me. So far, I'm impressed.

Here's what I would do. I would go to local camera shops (all malls have one) and try them out. When I found the one I like best, I would note the model and price and then see if I could get it for less online with shipping.
