I don't care about multiformat, upconverting, etc....I just want solid PQ over component vid. Period. There are a zillion in the $60-80 range and I'd like to know if one is worth purchasing over another or if I should just throw a dart.

I like my Apex 1225 I got for $30, but I'm not sure it's what you are looking for.

Something with a slightly less "disposable" rep than the Apex. I have a pretty nice 42" HDTV, so I'd like to take advantage of the nice picture it's capable of displaying.

My apex has been fine as well. You must have missed the deal from viking.com. The dart theory sounds pretty solid tho.

You guys are so much help. :p

Sears is having a 10% off thingy this Saturday AM, so maybe I'll just print a coupon or two and wander over there.

I have a Pioneer DV-260. Ran me about $75 at Wal-Mart. Not sure what Pioneer's current model out right now is, but whatever their ~$75 model is, I am sure it is just as good as the 260. I love mine.

I have nothing worthwhile to contribute to your search. But good luck.

Costco has an $80 Sony that does progressive scan output. I bought one and it's been fine. I like the remote much better than the one that came with my Panasonic DVD player.

Look for a progressive scan unit that has a Faroudja de-interlacing chip in it (may be labelled as "DCDi technology"). The picture quality of these chips is outstanding, although you may have to pay more than $80 to get a player with one.
