Recommend me a DSLR camera

My girlfriend has a Canon S400, and instead of getting another small point-and-shoot camera, I think maybe it would be a good idea to get a DSLR. They have been dropping in price lately, so I think it's probably a good time to buy.

What do you guys use? Pros and Cons?
 
How much do these camera usually go for? I want to have a reference price in mind so I can look for a good deal

Canon EOS-20D if you got the $$$

Otherwise, a Canon EOS-350D or EOS-300D and some really nice lenses.

Biggest plus for the FZ20 is Leica lens + image stabilization + manual features
Biggest minus is I've heard comments about "noisy" low-light shots.

I'm definately impressed with the panasonic I have, and would include it on the short list of cameras to look at when I upgrade someday.

Sometimes people say "dslr" when they mean "really good camera with lots of manual features, without the viewfinder issue of not really being able to see my shot"
Not having an idea of the price-range the OP had in mind, there isn't much clue as to if he really meant "true DSLR".
A true dslr it is not.

Thanks for the suggestion! However I did mean true DSLR

I kinda knew the 2 main ones will be the Nikon and the Canon Rebel... seems like they both have their own fan base 🙂

that they do, however in reality if you printed a picture or even looked at it on teh computer screen i will wager a large sum of money that you couldent tell the diff between a nikon and canon

that said you need to do your research on your own and stop listning to all of At on what to buy, because when you buy a high end camera you arnt really buying a camera you are buying into a lenss system, go hold and try all the cameras you are considering and as many lenses as you can that you think you might get and base your choice off of that and not the opinion of some nerd behind a computer screen in another part of the world
 
I love my Digital Rebel (300D)...

You really only have 3 real choices: Digital Rebel, D70, Rebel XT.

technicially 5 seeing as the D70 and D70s are slightly different

however nikon is releaseing a firmware upgrade to give the D70 all of the new stuff the D70s will have other then the slightly bigger LCD
 
Canon 20D is what I've got, and I love it. I know the D70 is very nice as well. You've got to go play with one of each in person and decide for yourself, because the 20D vs. D70 argument is an old one, and pretty much still undecided.

You should be careful too, because once I got my 20D kit, I then bought a 17--40L f4 lens, and then a 70-200L f4 lens. Plus my Lowepro Nature Trekker AW II bag, and my Manfrotto tripod, and now I don't have any money at all! 🙂

Good luck, hope you have some extra $$$ laying around, because it WILL get spent. 😉
 
Canon EOS 20D no doubt because that's what I own. 😀

Make sure not to skimp out on lenses either. I absolutely love my EF 50mm f/1.4.
