recommend me a CPU and mobo

Requirements:

1. an upgrade for my little girl's PII 300 system. So, i'm after average performance and price (AMD processor, maybe).

2. easy to configure. I went to newegg but almost all of their CPUs have 4/5 star rating, meaning not a pain in the A$$ w/c kinda hard to believe.

I know most of us here in AT build PCs for a living (or a just a hobby). I'm a noob when it comes to that so I appreciate all the recommendations you can give.

Post elsewhere, and make sure you say what the PC is gonna be used for, or else.. that will be the first 20 questions. Dont go to Best Buy, you will walk out with an Alienware.
