You can get a decent one for 20 bucks that goes in a doorway at just about any local fitness store. It will require putting holes into the door frame, though.

search on amazon for chin up bars. the most convenient are the ones that hook and hang on top of your door frame without screws and stuff like the P90x one you linked. i have one that i got for probably 20 bucks and it is super sturdy, convenient, doesn't require holes to be put in for permanent installation, and can be taken off and stored very easily.

The first two should work...

I have the Iron Gym bar listed first on this page and I like it. I has comfortable grip pads and places for a wide, short, or parallel hand position. You can also take it off the door and use it as a pushup bar. There is some assembly required, but it's very sturdy if you tighten the nuts well enough. I completely stopped using my old pull up bar which requires screw mounts on a door frame after I got this.

Agreed. I got one recently and assembly was a cinch and in addition to the pullups and pushups, you can also use it for situps. I don't have anything else to compare it to but I'm very pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone.

I use one of the I-beams running along the ceiling in my basement, is that a bad idea for some reason? I wear gardening gloves because the beams are steel and have a light rust coating.

If you just grab the beam and go, only problem is that it hurts like hell and you're just using your finger tips.

I have the Iron Gym that we got from Kohls for $25 or whatever and it works fine.

That is not a problem. If anything, it will just help develop ridiculous grip strength.

My wife got me an Iron Gym for Christmas last year and my son and I both use it. It's an awesome gizmo for the price, well worth it.

any long time users reporting a warping of the doorway? One of my friends said that his chin up bar messed up his door frame in the place he was renting.

Nope. And I use it 4 times a week, my son about the same. I weigh about 180, too, so I'm no lightweight.

So the molding is warping? They must have used Pine instead of Oak. heh heh.

I mentioned this in another thread, but my chin/pullup bar is made out of iron pipe and hangs over the I-Beam in my basement. I based it on the design shown here.

It works well enough...and the black shit from the iron pipe eventually stops coming off on your hands. :p

I can report minor cracking in the drywall above my door jam with the Iron Gym.

I'm 230lbs well under it's weight rating, but I will have to fill in the minor cracks before I sell. The bar itself is plenty sturdy though for me.
