recommend me a case/power supply

I am building a system around the MSI nForce 420 board and a 1700 Athlon.

It seems that a lot of cases do not support the onboard ethernet (they don't have a hole in the back
to plug the cable in through).

Any suggestions? Also, how much power would you recommend? I'm planning on staying with
the onboard graphics for now, but then possibly upgrading to a GeForce3 (actually, probably wait
for the next one).

Thanks,

Fed

pick up an enlight with a 300 watt or a 340 watt from newegg. they are inexpensive 50-85 bucks, and
enlight make some of the most reliable power supplies. I have built about 25 systems in the past year, and I always use enlight cases.

I second Enlight.

Click me

ENLIGHT EN-72370X3C4 MEDIUM ATX TOWER CASE with 1 Internal CaseFan - OEM - $47

I've made a couple systems with that case/ps and haven't had any problems. Nothing but positive comments about Enlight.

Unfortunately, Enlight case EN-7237 will not work for me, because it does not
have access to onboard Ethernet. My housemate has that case and we found out the hard
way yesterday that where the nForce motherboard has the ethernet port right above
the USB ports, there is no hole in the case to access it.

Anyone know of a good case that definitely has that?

Thanks,

Fed

Antec cases should have them. My SX635 does. It has a little metal covering but you just push/cut it out. It's a great case as everyone will tell you🙂

Ok, just found out that you can contact Enlight directly and get a new cutout for the back
of a 7237 series case that provides access to onboard Ethernet for $7 shipped.

Now, how much power should I get for this thing?

At least a 300w PS case, and make sure it is AMD Recommended. Otherwise, I would get the 340w Enlight, and just call them about a new cutout for the back. 300w doesn't even seem enough with the latest XPs.

Just to be safe, I would go with a 340w.

I highly recommend the SX600 or SX800 series from Antec. You can get them with a 300,350, or 400watt supply or just the case without the power supply. Easy to use, excellent airflow, great all around design...I don't think you can beat them for the money.

I recommend the Antec cases. I love mine, it's not quite the size of a full tower, which is nice, but bigger than a mid tower. The cooling options are also great. It also looks and feels solidly constructed. My power supply has worked fine, but of course I'm using a dual-P3 board and not the AMD route.

Fedaykin98, where would I buy this adapter or whatever for the I/O Panel on Enlight cases? I am too building a nForce rig soon, and I had my heart set on the Enlight 300W over at Newegg for $47 and now that I saw that it even comes with a Case fan, made me fall in love with it all over again. So if u could tell me where Enlight told you to go to get the new I/O Panel, that would be greatly appreciated. Also any suggestions on the case? Antec and Lian-Li are out of the question. I really only have about $50 for a 300W ps+case. Enermax I've heard good about, but I heard they aren't the best for overclocking and that's why i was gonna go Enlight because I heard they are the best. So, any suggestions would be appreciated. And Fedaykin98, if u would give me some info, I'd be very greatful. Thanks!

Antec computer case...........best price with good air flow. Powersupply 350 watt sparkle............

"Just avoid Antec power supplies, they're garbage"

Hmmm..can't say I've ever had any problems with them. Of course I've only used 3 myself and another 3 in systems that I've built. I'm not sure there is one that is much better in that price range. I'm all ears if you can offer something to back up the "they're garbage" statement. I tend not to take hardware reviews very seriously unless they consist of at least two complete sentences. 🙂

AOpen H600a with 400W PS. Cutout is definitely there above USB ports. Good airflow. Mounting for two rear case fans. P4 or Athlon.

Update on my situation and answers for Athlon4All:

Today I bought THIS case: link

They are raving about it in the Hot Deals forum. It lists for $42 at NewEgg, and it says that if you buy it with an AMD proc. you get $5 off. It
comes with TWO removable HD bays. It DOES have access for onboard ethernet above the USB ports. It also has front USB access. It apparently
has THREE fans (one with the 300W PS, one in the rear, and one on the SIDE. Pretty cool.

The only downsides are that somehow, when I checked out, I got charged $45 instead of $42 and, although I got an OEM Athlon 1700+, I don't
seem to have saved $5.

So it looks like Newegg may owe me $8. That being said, they still beat the prices of the competition. I also got the Thermaltake Volcano 6 Cu heat sink/fan ($13) and a $9 Teac floppy drive (I own no working floppy drives).

I bought my 256MB DDR DIMM at Crucial.com (using the Anandtech discount listed at the top of this forum), but upon checking out learned that they charge sales tax in 30 states, including this one. So I might as well have bought my Crucial memory directly from NewEgg, as it probably wouldn't have added much to the shipping. Oh well.

Now I'm still on the lookout for a good buy on a CD-RW. I picked up a WD 600BB 60 gig 7200rpm ATA100 HD from Dell.com last week off of a tip on the Hot Deals section; got it and a power strip (needed something to take the price over $150) for $108 after coupons etc.

I'm pretty stoked about the system and the reviews of the case on both the Hot Deals forum and the review section on newegg are very positive.

If anyone is still interested in getting the ethernet cutout for the ENLIGHT 7237, their phone number is 562-781-9898and their e-mail is
here.

Thanks, everyone, for the time.

Fed

I have the Enlight 7237 with 300 Watt from Newegg, and my ECS K7S5A motherboard came with a replacement I/O cover plate in the box to accomodate the onboard LAN port. So it might be included with your package anyway.

The 300 Watt is fine, but I would spend the extra $10 or so for the 340 Watt for some peace of mind based on all of the power supply paranoia I have read on the boards. Unfortunately, it was out of stock when I built my system.

Good Luck,

The Antec SX830/40 or the SX1030/40 are so much better than the Enlight, and you can get the SX830 for about $80 shipped.

I highly recommend them.

Hey, I just wanted to thank everyone for reading and writing suggestions here, but I do have one
piece of constructive criticism to toss out to the world:

please read whatever you are replying to. By the time many people gave me advice about the Enlight
case (which at least one person thought I had purchased), I had long since posted that I purchased
the EverCase one.

Also, one person (MUST have only barely SKIMMED what I wrote) thought that the phone number I
posted was my own, when it was very clearly labelled as Enlight's.

I hate to gripe when people are trying to help, and I'm not...but I do think it is a good heads-up
on internet etiquette to ask for everyone to make sure they read what they reply to.

Much love to all,

Fed
