Recommend me a blu ray player

you dont need to spend that much, just get whatever you want for around 100$

i have a cheap Samsung that works fine

Get a cheap XB1(s) as in when they're on discount, if that's the amount you want spending on a blu ray player otherwise anything cheaper should do just as well.

Xbox One S is a good option. Samsung K8500 and Philips BDP7501 are the cheapest dedicated players.

This is assuming you are wanting a UHD player, if you just want a BR player you are spending way way to much, $50 would get the job done.

I'm not going to tell you what to get, but I'll tell you what NOT to get. Don't get any Sony brand stand alone bluray players. I've had 2 over the past few years and they both shit the bed. I'll never get another Sony bluray player again.

On the flip side of that, meanwhile I've been using my PS4 as my primary bluray player since the last one crapped out, and I've just been lazy to get another standalone because the PS4 works fine and I typically have my joystick connected to it that sits on the seat next to where I watch movies from, so it's easy to control.

I still use my PS3, works great and it still gets firmware updates (for now) to play the latest blu-rays. I have a PS3 remote so it's no harder to control than any other player.

If you want the option to play 4K blu-rays the XBox One S (must be the S) is a good choice. There are often deals for around $240 including a game or two. (Sadly, Sony has no plans to add 4K disc support to the PS4 or PS4 Pro.)

i have herd mixed reviews on the xbox as a br player

a colleague has one, and claims every time he uses it it has to run an update for software

Your colleague is wrong. It may prompt you to update if there is a new update available, but you can still play movies with the current software if you choose not to update.

I have had a Sony BDP-S1100 Blu Ray Player for 4 years now without any problems.

For $100 I would get: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BTTHXZU?ref=emc_b_5_i

an he claims its every time he uses it, i personally do not know

i think he turns it off when not in use, so no auto updating

People used to claim that about the PS3 too, but it was only true if you went a month+ between turning it on.

Also, updates to the blu-ray player software are a good thing. Non-console disc players might only get them for a year or two, and after that there might be new discs that they have trouble playing.

Even with the PS3 you didn't have to update when it prompted you to do it, you just couldn't get online until you did.

There's no need to update anything on any console if all you want to do is watch a movie with the bluray player software.

I have had a Panasonic bdt230 for 4 years or so. Spent $35 on it back then. Only use it for dlna but it puts out an amazing picture, has had less than one update per year. I have never played a Blu Ray in it though as I don't own any.
