Actually, Fender's Jazz Bass is pretty much THE goto bass. Nearly every bass player obtains one of these at one time or another. If you can dig up a Fender Telecaster bass, you've hit gold

Actually, you could get a brand new one for under $1000 if you search around I'm sure. I got mine for $935 from ebay and it sells in Guitar Center for $1200+

Fender's basses are very nice, but consider Yahama's as well. I prefer them to the Fenders.
