Our OKI MB280 machine needs a toner replacement, and my father wants to take the opportunity to throw it away. I don't blame him, since it has disappointed us on so many levels.

We don't print all that much. Maybe 400 pages a month, only B&W. It's still a mystery to me how the last 5500 page toner lasted only 3 months.

I'm looking for a machine that is durable and has solid implementation all around. It should be easy to operate by older folks. Most importantly it shouldn't be picky with 3rd party toner. I know that if I get an HP inkjet, basically any one of them, I'd better stick with genuine cartridges or I'm in for a world of trouble. Is Xerox is less stringent on this front? I haven't owned a Xerox yet.

I am undecided between the HP Officejet 6500 (inkjet but the black is relatively cheap), Xerox Workcentre 3220 and Xerox Phaser 3300MFP.

I don't know about Brother and Samsung and we can't get a Dell. Samsung's multifunction laser machines look kinda flimsy to me, and I don't like how Brother sells the drum as a separate unit, so I don't know.

We're buying outside the US so can't use any deals. I find that information on printers is scarce, and has always been. I mean, enthusiast sites don't take any interest in them. Hope you guys can guide me in the right direction. Thanks. :)

Brother b/w laser MFCs seem to work well

might want to look at the MFC-7840W

Thanks for the suggestion. I see people are indeed happy with this model.

I've just missed a good offer on the Xerox 3220 (should have decided sooner), so now the 3220 and the MFC-7840W cost the same, and the 3300MFP is $70 more.

Let me see what's the cost of consumables for the Brother including the separate drum. Is it true what I hear that using unbranded toner is not good for the drum?
