You can get Grange for under $150? Best I could find is $170, and that's for a 1994, a mediocre year for them.

It can be found for a little under $100, but pick up a bottle or two of 2002 Merryvale Profile. It's a great wine.
Nice wine. Just tasted a vertical (99, 2001, 2002), and the 02 was my favorite.
Since the guy's traveled through Europe, I'd stay well away from European wine. He's probably found his own favorites. Go with CA, or Australian.
The above two were good suggestions, if they fit in your budget, and your friend likes wines that are a bit bigger, more fruit forward, than your typical bdx.
Another few you might consider:
2003-2004 Torbreck Run Rig
2001, 2004 Torbreck Descendant
2005 Amon-Ra Shiraz
Herb Lamb Cabernet (not EII), any year except 2000
2004 Kay Brothers Amery Vineyards Block 6 Shiraz
2002-2004 Kilikanoon Oracle
One that might work well (good name recognition, bdx style, very tasty, and right maturity) is a mid 90's Dominus. 1994 or 1991 would be great, though any year between 1983 and 1997 would be good.
