I've got a lot of free time coming up and not alot of games to keep me away from the DIY, im in serious danger of owning a house that has things like twigs in vases or pebbles in a bowl if I dont spend some money on entertainment soon....

I like something on Steam for convienince and something with an engaging story, dont mind 1st/3rd person - stratagy - simulator - shooter.

Some games i enjoyed previously
planescape torment
second sight
mass effect
elder scrolls series
longest journey and dreamfall
indigo prophecy

so any recomendations?

Metro 2033 - Good story, not great, worth playing though
GTA San Andreas had a good story, IMO. Definitely a ton of fun. GTA IV is also decent.
Fallout 3 and New Vegas have good stories

KOTOR 1 and 2, in order.
The story is a little messier with KOTOR 2, but its still a good game.

In BOTH of them, you really need to pay close attention to what people say. The Star Wars universe is even more complex than you realize.

This. You learn a lot of things that you wouldnt know about the Star Wars universe (then and in EP 4-6).

(Novels work too for that though)

Like the Rule of 2,
Why the sith came to be a "cult" after the race sith died out, etc.

Bioshock 1 and 2 had great stories, though the 1st definitely trumped the second.

I'm playing KOTOR 1 for the first time right now and am having a blast. I restarted like 10 times before I decided how I want to build my character because I had no idea how to build him and what to expect. It took a bit to get use to the clunkyness of the interface, but in the end it's totally worth it.

They don't hold your hand like in today's games like having arrows point to your quest locations. So paying attention to what's going on is crucial. I like it this way.

Yes, though there is 1 part I did not like with Kotor 1, but I won't say it as to spoil it for you.

Even more importantly they have some strong hints as to the origin of their galaxy and stuff.

It may just be me, but I enjoyed the story in mafia 2, not to mention the game looked bloody amazing graphically somehow.

I think the plot to Human revolution is pretty interesting too.

MAFIA 2 had an ok story, the game wasn't long though. It was really short in fact, in comparison to MAFIA 1.

If you don't mind outdated graphics, try MAFIA 1... that story was great iirc.

Deus Ex Human Revolution was pretty good once you get going a little. The endings were a touch bland, but I liked the touch that some of the key conversations during the game are not always the same. There are about 3 different variations on the same conversation, so you cannot simply memorize a series of responses.

No One Lives Forever is a bit old, but a great game. Loads of story, not to mention humor. The sequel and some of the spinoffs like Contract JACK left a bit to be desired to say the least, but the original was a classic IMO.

Pretty sure Kingdoms of Alamur (check my spelling on that) has a PC port. Don't believe the claims of a 60 hour main quest, but it had a decent story to it.

You won't find them on Steam, but the original StarCraft and its expansion were surprisingly story driven. Same with the "original" Dawn of War (not the Dawn of War 2) game. It helps if you're at least somewhat aware of the Warhammer 40,000 universe for Dawn of War, but not strictly necessary.

Also, Morrowind and Oblivion have VERY deep stories if you are willing to talk with everybody and read all the books in game.

witcher 2

really enjoyed the 1st witcher and purchased the second, I really wanted to like it but the combat really put me off. Too much rolling around. It does keep getting highly recommended though so prehaps i'll give it another try

Planescape Torment
mentioned that I already played that ;)

Elder Scrolls Morrowind/Oblivion and Skyrim is Epic

Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Very good games.

The Witcher 1 and 2. So far I like the first better. Very nice games.

Just began playing Dragon Age: Origins. Looks very promising.

Two Worlds II looks very nice too. The first was also very good.

Borderlands and Dragon Age: Origins.

^ trolling? Borderlands is all kinds of fun, but "strong story" is being very, very kind.

KOTOR 1-2 has already been mentioned.

Neverwinter Nights 1 - campaign 1 was a bit weak but 2-3 were good, especially 3
Neverwinter Nights 2 - campaign 1 was also a little weak (worth playing though). The Mask of the Betrayer campaign was very good.

Agree. Kotor 1 is a great game with a great story. Recommended.

The Witcher is good too.
