Looking for some new games to play. I'm not really an avid gamer and don't play online. I've played GTA IV, Bully, and some Postal 2 mods in the past year. I played Max Payne 2 a few years ago and liked it, too. I like games that have some sort of plot to them or, at the very least, extremely irreverent humor, like the Postal 2 series.

With the above in mind, I'd am interested in hearing your suggestions.

Hardware: Laptop, 1440x900 screen, GeForce 9700GTS video, 2ghz Core 2 Duo, 4gb RAM, Vista x64.

Max Payne 1 is inferior in many ways but still worth playing.
Serious Sam First and Second Encounter could be fun for you. If you cant find them I suppose you could settle for Serious Sam 2.

Mass Effect and Fallout 3 have horrible reputations for being unstable, bordering on unplayable. If you have a friend who owns these games, I strongly recommend stability testing them on your computer before buying them. Some people can run Fallout 3 and never see a crash, some people can't play more than 5 minutes.

Dunno about FO3, but Mass Effect's problems are ancient history. Nvidia drivers post-181 fixed pretty much everything.

Fantastic. I'll google a bit more about Mass Effect and pick it up tomorrow if what you said is true. It's down to $20 at Walmart and Best Buy ;)

I second Fallout 3 and Mass Effect, but I also recommend Deadspace, despite that game being too gruesome and scary IMHO.

I already beat Fallout 3 with one character, went through half of the game with the second, and I am still coming back for more because of the sheer amount of added content thanks to DLCs. Honestly I cant remember a single player game that I would be coming back to again and again after playing through once, but Fallout 3 changed all that. The developers definitely put a lot of time and effort into this game. There is just so much variety both in items, characters and story.
Sadly some people only go through the main storyline, which is relatively short. This in turn makes them falsely believe that Fallout 3 has little to offer them. They couldn't be more wrong! This masterpiece of a game is more about exploring random locations looking for various things and quests.. Living the life of a wastelander! Fallout 3 is now better than ever after it has been patched and several DLCs have been added. My favorite one is Point Lookout, but all of them are worth playing through at least once.
Some people complained about crashes and bugs. But I barely ever experienced any of that. There were a few crashes every now and then, but it really isn't a big deal, and you can always load from a previous save.

When it comes to Mass Effect, there is something that I really don't like about it's "plastic" looking graphics. Still the storyline and the gameplay were so awesome that I simply couldn't pass it up. I enjoyed ME all the way to the end.

I just finished Call of Juarez (the original) two nights ago. From the perspective of a pure FPS it was ok, the story, though, was very good. You have to play for about half an hour before you fire your first shot, which is kinda weird, but once you get going there is plenty of shooting. It is a Western, set in the 1880's so you use revolvers, rifles and shotguns. I don't like RPG's; I played Fallout 3 for an hour and got sick of the dialogue menus... same with Mass Effect - I just can't stand sitting there and clicking on one dialogue menu item after another. This game doesn't have that, but it has lots of cut scenes and voice over, creating a pretty rich story line that I was surprised to find engrossing and immersive. So if you are looking for a great FPS, this isn't it. If you are looking for a FPS with fun gameplay and a cool story, this might be worth checking out.

Also Bioshock, and the Half Life series are excellent choices.
