Recommend Excellent Wired Router

My father went the cheap route and bought a POS router that was barely adequate and the signal would always go out.

SO,

I wanna do things right this time. I need an awesome wired router. About <$150 for my project. (BTW, 2nd PC distance is 50 feet). One that minimizes LAG and has stable connection. Speed is not that much of an issue, though I want to use my gigabit ethernet connections.

Just wanted to give you information.

The Wireless of the device that you linked to might not be better for 50? than what you have now.

The Giga is Not Jumbo Frames.

I think you should do some stuying about the issues involved good wireless and wird Giga Network; it is not just an issue of spending money, and the color of the devices.

lol yeah I was just being dumb 😛

I don't really need the wireless but it cost like 10 more to have it! So what the heck. I'll be using cables to connect. I was thinking about doing wireless again but too much of a headache.

BTW, I should mention that my old router is dead.

Any other thoughts?

Let me get this right,

You need a giga 802.3 connection, wired ethernet, spanning 50'.
You don't need, but sort of want wireless as well.

?

yeah I would like wireless but am worried about having to end up buying a bunch of repeaters, etc...
I've been burned. Burned bad!

if you'll be using cables to connect you can get a ten dollar router and it'll be much faster than wireless. my understanding is that wired > wireless.

no way, dude. I did that once and its sucked. When I finally got it to work it died. Its a Dlink 514 or something like that. Cost $40

That router is decent IMO; I have one. A couple of counterpoints though -- if you're getting connection losses, then your router might not be the problem. The modem or ISP or connection to ISP could be the problem.

Gigabit is not going to do anything for you across the internet. It's going to give you benefits inside your LAN if you do significant data transfers.

Wireless is going through an upgrade to 802.11n, which this router doesn't support. If wireless performance and range are important, it might be worth holding off for a few months for the new products and their prices to stability. Netgear has a new gigabit 802.11 pre-n, but it's expensive.

Well as a few guys have already said, Gigabit isn't going to do much for your connection at all unless you have some intense file transfers happening on your LAN. If you are, you'll feel it, 🙂

What sucked about your DLink? There are some pretty nice 'gaming routers' out there, which in my opinion are actually really cool, but I don't want you to get your hopes up and then not notice much of a difference at all.. which is possible.

D-Link DGL 4300

That one has a lot of awards, it may be overkill, but at least you can check it out.

I'd go linksys for local. Or a cisco 8xx series :0.

I'v had TONS of dlinks and netgears (both the plastic and mid grade metal boxes) and they've all needed constant power resets.

The dlink 514 gave me constant blackouts and speed was always slow. I think it's like the cheapest dlink model, btw. Thanks for the help, folks, but I ended up buying the Dlink DGL 4300 and a 100 ft ethernet cable.
