i'm particularly interested in a centrino....

are the dells any good from what you've heard/experienced? what's really important to me is something that will last me a VERY long time (like the 433mhz celeron hp lappy that i'm using for not much longer).

I bought this laptop a couple of weeks back:
Toshiba A40-4E4
Celeron 2.6Ghz
256MB PC2100 DDR
40GB HD
15" (1024 x 768)
DVD and CDRW combo drive
built-in 802.11b wireless
Windows XP Home

for $1199 CDN (~900US)

The battery last me more than 3 hrs so I am very happy with it...

I'd get a Dell 600m. You can get a centrino 1.4 with possibly 512m and 40gig, with a combo drive around 1,200, and aruond 4.7 pounds light. Built in 802.11b (up to g) as well.

I have four of these and four 5150s at work for client check outs. They go out into the field on a daily basis, and are treated quite roughly if i shouldn't call it abuse, and the M600s take them very well. We haven't had any problems with the four since we acquired them. Hope this helps.

Do you any specific needs with it? What levels/kinds of work do you plan on doing with it?

Yep.

But wheat ever you do, DO NOT GET A CELERON LAPTOP.

Athlon XP-M are good and can be had cheap. The emachine with the A64 is also supposed to be great. And every now and then a Cen. laptop comes out onsale.

i want to use it for my job messing with db's n stuff. but i'd also like to use it at home. in other words, i'd like a nice all around lappy with a good vid card also. durability is a must... i remember my roommate had to rma his m600 twice due to hard drive and cd rom issues... but it did look like a sweet lappy.

thanks all (and of course rossman).

anyone recommend what sort of extended warranty i should buy? (if any)

ZT3000

You can downgrade it a bit but still get a sweet 15" screen with a 1.5GHz Centrino and Radeon 7500 for $1150. Later this summer I'm going to get that decked out with a beautiful 1920x1200 screen and 2 batteries for some serious laptop loving. It's got a small profile too!

i think centrino will be >$1200 most of the time unless you get a fantastic deal. you could actually drop below that if you got a pentium-M celeron, but who wants that?

i think the athlon-xp Ms are a good alternative.

Perhaps you should consider an IBM, since you say you want your laptop to last very long. Dell and most of the others won't cut it.

The R51 is $1299. It might be less if you can get a discount (ordering over the phone, of course).

The R51 is the cheapest centrino IBM system available. Although its build quality is not as great as the T series, it is still miles ahead of other competitors.

Thats not a correct price if you use the 1.4 PentiumM with only 128mb of Ram and take the reast to the lowest possible you still have a 1200 laptop. The only way to get that low is to take a pentiumm CELERON>.. you might as well use a pen and paper... its faster then a celeron ;)

Celerons in notebooks are better than the desktop variants... (256 kb L2)

And if you dont wanna game... its a good cheap option
