Lots of makers.

powercolor
HIS
sapphire
gecube
visionteck
radeon
probably some others

Any to steer clear of? Should I just go by price? Maybe they're all good?

I'm looking for a 256mb version. Overclocking would be nice as well.

cheapest/best warranty is what you're looking for. maybe bundled accessories/games? whatever you want.

how about the x1950xt?

edit: i agree with swtethan - HIS is good.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but if you can get one at a good price and have a decent PSU (450w+ and 30A+ on the 12v) Sapphire's are pretty good (well my one is anyway).

We had a few failure's where I work at in the first batch we recieved, but that was generally due to a crap PSU being used or poor ventalation in the case...I believe that newer versions of the Sapphire 512mb have corrected the overheating VRM problem and we haven't had any of the later batches that we've sold in the past two months being returned due to failures.

I know a few members on this board have had a few problems with their Sapphire's but I believe that they had one the first batch of Sapphire's.

Ask Apoppin for a second opinion on the Sapphire...he had a few issues with them earlier this year.

Radeon is the "name" of the ATI cards, just like Nvidia's "Geforce".

I'd just get whatever is cheapest.

I just got a new in box retail visiontek, x1950 pro agp off of ebay for 172 dollars total price, i see there were a few cheaper than that now

so far so good, it's only been in my system for 6 hours thou

it's not that loud in my opnion............it's a heavy card, a little on the long side, but I have plenty of room

I notice a slight increase in heat coming out of my exhaust fans, but not a huge amount, my fans did not speed up under load yet

on a side note, what are you people with a x1950 agp using for a tool to overclock etc?

Heh, I found the exact same card, brand new, on ebay this morning and bought it. You got a better deal though- I paid $173.50 :).

At 1280x1024 with a 2.4 proc I think this card makes more sense for me than the xt version (which costs $300 total).

As far as your question, one review I read used ati tray tools to oc. It seems like you can get a decent oc on the clock speed but some have noted the memory speed doesn't oc at all. No temp sensor, as you probably know, so don't fry anything.

Best Bang for you Buck Card is the Sapphire 512 MB X1950 Pro. I f you're going to get a HIS, make sure it's a Revision 2 card which just hit NewEgg last week. There were lots of problems with the Rev.1 cards, so many so, they re-designed them by changing the clock rates as well as the type of memory being used. I had to RMA 2 of the Rev.1 cards for the same problem and was finally issued a refund by the e-tailer.

I am currently using the Gecube X1950XT and it works great. Previously owned the Visiontek, Sapphire, and HIS X1950 Pro (twice).

well I got the ati tray tools to work it appears. I underclocked it all I could for most of my gaming, I will up the power for the few game that need it for me.

you people think underclocking will lower the power supply demand all that much? or help the card live longer?

nope, the AGP X1950Pro is a strange beast, it only draws around 65-70 watts of power, but still requires a beefy PSU...underclocking won't help in this case...don't be a tight wad and skimp on the PSU...it'll cost you more in the long run if you skimp on it now...just ask Apoppin about that one....

I am not buying a new PSU, unsure how much a big deal that would be, I have a dell XPS gaming rig with a 460 watter. the power supply is underneath the main pc case in it's own compartment. I am sure not just any PSU will work with this one.
???????????????????

so far the exhaust fans seem to putting out less heat with it under clocked

I did notice that I have a 6 pin power lead unused in my system, but the card came with a cable that connected two of the old 4 pin and went to a 6 pin (well 5 acutally) on the card

so the power supply has 4 separate power cables, (3) 4 pinners, one 6 pinner, plus the connection to the motherboard

460 watts?....what is the 12v rated at?

If it is more than 30A, then you are good to go, with a X1950Pro...if it is less, don't bother, the X1950 will die pretty quickly.

the X1950Pro needs 450W with 30A on the 12v.

ya 460 watts..................amps????/ unsure since I can't read the sticker on it without ripping the pc cases all apart

well I just looked again and bent the case

it say max output 12v_1 is 17A and 12v_2 is 17A

so 17A per rail as i take it?????????????

it's the first generation DELL XPS gaming PC made in 2003 if anybody knows anything about them

plus one of the connectors got disconnected in the process, it didn't die without it. LOL

17 Amp's x2 is about 32A@max load...so you are good to go....so no need to underclock with your setup.

thanks for the info, note nothing is overclocked in this system and it is not heavy overloaded with extra hardrives etc

would I be better off getting a different cable and using the 6 pin power lead? and not the two 4 pins into a 6 pin????????

so underclocking the memory will NOT prolong it's life span? I thought the first x1950 pro agp's have weak memory...that's how my 9800 died at age 3 years in this pc, but I overclocked and it had plenty of gaming miles on it

I'm not sure....what type of 6 pin connector is it that your PSU has?...if it's a 3x2 connector then you should be able to plug it straight in to a X1950pro (as long as it isn't a Sapphire or Diamond which have 2x 4 pin molex connectors instead).

yes , it's a 3x2 power connector, well it's a 3x2 but one hole is empty, the card had 3x2 with one hole empty too, but the empty holes don't match (line up),

I don't have a long enough cable and would have to get add in a extension to use it

edit changed the 3x3 to 3x2

3x3 would be 9 pins then...
