I have a 256MB 7900 GT that I want to upgrade soon or at least in a couple months if I should wait for something else to come out. What would be next logical step up? And is there anything coming out in say 3-4 months that would impact my decision to upgrade?

When is the next generation of VPU's from nvidia supposed to be out? I think the 8800GTS 640MB is priced out of my budget right now; the 320MB is close, but it's not as much of a step up.

techfuzz, I posted a similar thread a few months back, and the conventional wisdom at the time was to keep my 7900 GT KO.

Typically, from what many have posted and my own experience, the time to upgrade is when your card can no longer handle the latest and greatest games with moderate eye candy enabled.

I am able to play Oblivion, Supreme Commander, Company of Heroes and others without taking a framerate hit...on a 22" LCD at native resolution.

I know I can probably get away with my 7900 GT KO at least until Christmas...at which point the 8800GTS 640MB will probably fall rather nicely into both of our budgets.

Agreed; with my overclocked 7900gt I see no reason to upgrade yet. I can play Oblivion and STALKER at pretty high settings at 1920x1200.

The 7900GT is still a good card, only upgrade if you feel that it's slow. If you do want to upgrade, either get the 8800GTS 640, 2900XT, or you can wait for the mid-range cards of the next gen.

I think maybe I'll wait until it's time to build a new computer next year and then get a new card. I just wish nvidia would get their drivers in order; still way too many bugs in them.

I overclocked my 7900GT to GTX speeds.

Its good enough for the time being, and will hold me over until the DX10 refresh from Nvidia and ATI and maybe the availability of some actual DX10 games. ;)

Though the 8800GTS is a nice card, it probably wont cut it in DX10 stuff for long so I think its worth holding off.

I was thinking the same thing Canterwood. If I wait until the next gen DX10 cards come out, they should handle most every DX10 game for a long time to come even if I don't get the top end card when they're released.
