You probably eliminated some of the best RPGs on the PC.

I was going to suggest Fallout New Vegas and Oblivion IV, but nevermind.

Borderlands has RPG elements, but I would not consider it a full blown RPG game.

Since you don't want to play any of the good western RPGs, you should just stick with a PS2 and NDS.

No Star Wars KoTOR or Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines for you!

In the FF style, try The Last Remnant. It's made by Square-Enix and looks like it's what you're looking for.

It's on Steam and surely other places.

Gothic 3 with community patch.

I've always loved G3's visuals; it's a really beautiful game with a huge world to explore.

edit - oh, and give Risen a try too.

This statement:

is at extreme variance from this statement:
not interested in Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, MMORPG, or any of the like.

Makes me really wonder if you are actually looking to play an RPG at all or if maybe you have the genre confused with another type of game?

the games you list that you are not interested in pretty much define the genre in today's gaming industry. Surprised you didn't mention NWN2 in there as well as then you would have the entire hat trick.

However, if we ignore the disparity, I might recommend Diablo 3 when it comes out.

the last remnant is pretty good once you get the hang of the combat/leveling system. JRPG through and through

Yah, Last Remnant is it. Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale probably doesn't have strong enough story or nice enough graphics for you. Septera Core is old, and basically has a futuristic environment, but then so is the setting of any Final Fantasy game released in the last fifteen years, or Chrono Cross for that matter.

Otherwise, what I think you want is a console. Probably a PlayStation 2 really. The graphics aren't as pretty as the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, but that's where all the games you want to play are.

Pretty much agree with this poster. You just ruled out most of the good RPGs for the PC. The selection of JRPGs on the computer is not good. You might have a better selection on a console. (Arent there a lot of FF games for the PS3?)

BTW, I dont now what you mean by "kick ass" graphics, but a mobile GT240 (Edit: Sorry GT540, but the same statement still applies) will allow you to play at 1366x768 if that is your laptop's resolution, but is a relatively slow card. I doubt that you can play a graphically demanding game at more than medium.

you should try the dungeon siege series; one of the best hack and slash in recent times

Ok.

Morrowind
Oblivion
Skyrim
Neverwinter Nights 2 (including Persistant worlds)
Witcher 1/2
Gothic 2/3
Dragon Age: Origins
Temple of Elemental Evil

To a lesser degree:
Titan Quest
Dungeon Siege 2
Diablo 2
War in the North
Two Worlds 2
Torchlight

You're asking for old-schoolish RPGs with 'HD' graphics (silly term btw). Not many games fit that description.

I recommend the Witcher series if you're into real-time combat (the first one with the texture mod still looks good, the second one looks gorgeous.)

If you're looking for turn-based combat, I dunno. King's Bounty has RPG elements, but it's a strategy game at its core.
