need an LCD (17-19 inch) that would be well suited for gaming and at the same time wouldn't break the bank. Any recommendations or good deals out there at all? I have the GeForce4 4200Ti from Gainward (with DVi, I presume). Please advise!
would gladly stay under 450 after tax/shipping...with coupons, PM, etc...rebates not too good but what the hell, a good deal comes along, rebates will work too

The VP171B is the hitachi but with an anti-glare screen, thinner bezel which makes it look like an 18 inch, DVI cable included, nicer looking design, better pivot and height adjuster.

Too be honest... If you play games you do not want a LCD. I am absolutely serious. You will be very disapointed compaired to a CRT. LCD's are still not there for real gaming. Its good for most other things, but it still needs a few more generations of maturaty before you can use it for gaming. Not only that, what are you going to do when you get your brand new LCD and you have a bright red or blue dot in the middle of the screen that never goes out? Or even worse have several? The larger the LCD the more dead pixels it is allowed to have before it is considered "bad". There is nothing as aweful and annoying as a brand new $$$ monitor with very VISIBLE defects in it that you can't do anything about because it is not really "defective".

Until LCD manufacturers fix their process and/or "defective" policies, I would never spend money on a LCD screen unseen. Even at 16ms response rate, you will still notice a little ghosting. LCD still are not viable in my opinion for a gamer.

Have you even used a 16ms TFT? I use my Hitachi all the time in games with it. And there isnt any ghosting whatsoever with it. Or trails.
The majority of people who claim that TFTs arnt for games, either havnt used a TFT, or used one with a high responce time.

You get a DVI cable with the Hitachi. It seems like a good monitor that Viewsonic, but like i said, the Hitachi was the original gamers TFT, its still great for games.

I personally dont notice the 25ms response at all on my AWESOME samsung 172T. This LCD is very solid in that it has very rich colors and the viewing angles are HUGE 170 vertically and horizontally. Everything is crisp and clear. most of the 16ms LCDs have a lack of color depth even if their specs SAY they have a good contrast and number of colors, etc.

I recently purchased the Viewsonic VP171B also. I do have one sub pixel that is lit blue way up in the left corner. However, the only time you notice is a) the screen/scene is supposed to be black and b) You have to be looking for it. If i wouldnt have tested it under monitorsdirect's toolkit, I would have never even known I had one lit. The majority of the people that have been over to look at my LCD never even notice, so no big deal to me.

This LCD is awesome. Currently I have only tested it under UT2003 (this computer is somewhat in parts, I need a dvd rom still). No ghosting, streaking, etc. Looks great. As mentioned above by gary, it does have thin bezels and a very nice array of adjustments for height, pivot, etc. Anti glare screen also a big plus for me anyways.

I've got the NEC 1760NX with 16ms response time and it's awesome for gaming. The color, clarity, and brightness are outstanding. I'm never going back to CRT's and I had a good one. :p

I wouldn't go lower than 16ms response time though because 1second or 1000ms/16ms = 62.5FPS and that's a maximum.

Just scored the 17' Philips from the West L.A. Office Depot on Barrington & Olympic. It was their last one, display model, so they knocked off another 10%. I basically bought it with little research, so I'll see if I like it and if not, I have a local OD I can return it to. But the greatest thing of all, tho, is this: at this particular location, they ran out of the Memorex keyboard/mouse combos, so they subbed a Cordless Access Duo for it! A $60 KB&M combo! Huge YMWV, but if you're gonna buy any LCD from any So. Cal OD, buy one there!

And now will return it as a FW member gave me a stackable dell coupon for a NEC LCD1860NX-BK ...how is that one? DVI-D included and a better response time than the Phillips
