Recommend an FPS like BF 1942

I don't play online (I'm not very good at all) and only play BF 1942 single player from time to time. Have a new PC now that can handle a more modern FPS. I bought a copy of Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising because it looked like a WWII-style FPS game I might like.

But it's just too complicated. Too many controls, and you have to coordinate what other guys are doing which is more than I want to deal with.

Is there a current combat-style FPS that isn't any harder than BF 1942 to play? I have a keyboard and mouse only.

How about any of the sequels to battlefield 1942?

I think battlestations pacific is a very similar game too.

BF2 has a very similar single play mode, you and your bots against computer bots.
Come march, Battlefield Bad Company 2 should be out for the PC, and will have a more traditional single player game.

As for other possibilities, the older Call of Duty games may work for you. If you are not that "good", the newer ones may drive you crazy, they are very "frenetic".

How about Half-Life?

No the Battlestations are not similar. They are a sim/arcade type of game where you fly the planes and boats and such.

Team Fortress 2 or BF2 play online who cares if you stink. I know I stink but regardless they're tons of fun.

Call of Duty: World at War is on sale for 29.99 this week at Best Buy and it is worth a shot. Also if you want a little slower online gameplay check out some of the bolt action only servers for the game since they tend to be slower and not so hectic since you want to make your shots count due to slower reload times and single shots.

get 2142. the upcoming patch includes Northern strike booster pack and is a much more balanced game than BF2.

Funny thing is 2142 deluxe version which includes northern strike is actually cheaper than the one without. Amazon has it for 19.99

Just get Battlefield 2. It's 9.99 at Best Buy last I saw. It's not that much fun to play single player though. However, if you're not good at the game, prepare to get slaughtered online repeatedly. Indeed, it sucks to lose all the time but the more you play, the more you know how to play.

Well, not out right now but Battlefield 1943 is supposed to be coming out at the end of March for the PC.

Fun game (on the 360/PS3) but only three maps (4 if you count air superiority) eventually wears itself out.

For the same sort of large open-map, somewhat sand-boxy feel that the older BF games had, BF2 would be at the top of my list. 2142 still had large maps and vehicles to drive, but I felt the quality of the game play in BF2 was far superior.

The recent COD games are strictly single player campaigns. You work through a story, essentially. They're fun, but they're not just do-as-you-please open combat. The open combat maps (online, or if there is a way to play them by yourself) are also far smaller than Battlefield maps, and there are no vehicles.

Yes, I have World at War FS/FT that you can have for $ 20. That would be a good start. And TF2 is a no brainer for FPS multi. Best game ever created.

You could try Day of Defeat: source too. Not bad for like $4.99 or whatever the download is. You'll make your money back the first time you play it.

2142 was like crack to me. played it for >a year. loved it. then had to rebuild my machine a few times.. got tired of reinstalling the main game + each patch. the patching system was EXTREMELY buggy... that was probably the worst of any game i've played

download the mod Desert Combat for bf1942! i loved the helicopter movement in that game way more than bf2. i was pro at it, flying in the hangers, cruising a foot over everything never crashing and just flying in circles around troops letting my gunner take care of everyone

Wait 3 months for BFBC2?

I enjoy the Forgotten Hope mod for BF2 very much. Project Reality was pretty good also.
If you get 2142, it had a decent Star Wars mod, but I don't know if anyone still plays it.

BF2 is about as good as your gonna get until BF3 comes out. BF 2142 was good but I still preferred BF2 for its overall fun factor. Plus with 1.5 they gave out the DLC maps for free.

I saw the BF2 Complete collection on Direct2Drive last night for $15. It's gets you the Special Forces mod for $5 over the regular BF2 which is $10 just about anywhere, even Best Buy.

I must have had a hundred hours logged playing Desert Combat. That was one of the greatest mods of all time.

I still play on occasion. We used to have our own server that was very populated, but with fewer and fewer people playing these days, there's only a handful of consistently populated servers these days. It's embarrassing to say, but I probably rank up there with the best helicopter pilots in Desert Combat - and our clan definitely had a few of the best. I even made my first game movie several years ago as a tribute to the helos in Desert Combat.
