I've currently got the standard home-network setup with a D-Link 802.11g wi-fi router (DI-524) serving wireless and wired devices. I want to extend my network to another site approximately 0.7 miles away with direct line-of-sight. I will be using a cantenna-style amplifier at the remote site, aimed at my home. The remote site will have no more than 4 devices - all wired. I've been looking at inexpensive bridges with 4 wired ports and have found the NETGEAR WGPS606 and the OvisLink AirLive WL-5460AP - both available on ebay for around $50.

Does anybody have any feedback about either of these units - or about units with similar functionality and prices? If necessary I can replace the home router to ensure compatibility with the bridge, but I don't want to go with one of the expensive bridges (Orinoco, Proxim, etc.).

Thanks!

You can also try a single WHR-HP-G54 to start, but with DD-WRT or similar firmware installed to enable client bridge mode support.

Buffalo also sells a client mode bridge -- their "Wireless Ethernet Converter".

The Netgear WGPS606 is a nice little client mode bridge IMO, but is probably not in the class of the Buffalo in terms of wireless performance because it doesn't have a built-in amplifier.

The most flexible, but also most complicated setup would be with the WHR-HP-G54 running DD-WRT. E.g. WDS or client mode bridging. Client mode bridging with WPA2. Client mode repeater bridge with DD-WRT v24.
